Mine lasted about 18 months, but finally died about 6 months ago.  And I never spot fed it, it just got what was in the water.

You would need to see Jon's tank to understand why he had such longivity with the Scallop.

I bought one without knowing much about it and just tried to spot feed it whatever was at hand for feeding a bta and it survived for about 12 months and died in an unrelated tank crash.  He was quite a happy healthy guy actually, knowing what I do now it suprises me.

Here is a link on Flame Scallops, very informative. I know flame scallops and electric scallops aren't identical, but I figure the information in the article could pertain to both.

Article Link

I have a flame scallop and I spot feed it 5-50 micron golden pearls every night. Once a scallops finds a location it probably won't move too much again. Mine hasn't moved in months. Unfortunately the location it likes is behind almost everything, so unless you know where to look you won't ever see it.

Im pretty sure Im the friend that wants one..., but something I wanted to know is: will the current affect other tank mates when its in a 24 gal cube???..., I talked to Mark on Saturday about it and he said somone on the board said that its not electricity.., that its just a bright line on one of its flaps that looks like electricity when it folds back and forth, but the description in LiveAquatica it says:

"The mantel of this species seems to create electricity which can be seen shooting across the mantel like lightning bolts. These surges of electricity are bright enough to be seen in the aquarium when the lights are off."

anyone know anything about this?¿?

My scallop lasted for a bit over a year. Then one day he moved and that was it. Gone in less than a week after that. He was pretty cool though.

Most flame scallops (they have the red "fringe") that you can get around here are not "electric". They will be fine in your tank. Look at the price as a good indicator. 10 bucks or so will not get you an electric anything!

Good luck!

They usually last for about a year.  Some die fairly quick.

The problem with electric scallops is they will often attach in your tank in a place where you can't see them.

What a load of BS. I cannot see the blue "lightning bolts" in the dark. It is not electricity. It is marketing hype.

haha, i don't exactly top off with phyto but i do probably tend to overdose since i have so much on hand.  i'd say i use about a half gallon a week on average.  any more than that and my tank can turn quite green for a day...  i don't have anything that uses phyto "directly" like scallops or clams so i try not to over do it.

i wonder if i could have kept one longer had i maintained a green tint to my tank continually though...  mark have you ever tried putting one in with your clams since you're already feeding massive amounts of phyto?

I've had one in a 10 gal in the sun which also had a clam. I fed that tank more than anyone could imagine. It did well for me and seemed to grow during the three months before I gave the tank to my neice. Don't remember how long it lived in her care. But I'm not sure that phyto is their main food. I believe their main food is bacteria laden detritus.
