I've been trolling the site for a while now and thought it time to finally post something. I got an Eclipse nano from my brother and when I did it wasn't in good shape. Parameters were all off. I'm usually a fresh water guy and thought I could handle this little thing of his, but like I said everything was way off and ended up killing his two clowns. I got the salt down and everything else I knew about in order. Then the bristle worms came out. I read Coral Banded Shrimp work really well so I got one and she has really done her job well. So I added a clown and a damsel. They all seem to be getting along really well. I was thinking about adding some coral. So here is the question with this long post, will the CBS eat or harm coral?
They can eat coral, but some don't, just depends on how lucky you are I guess. I have read a lot of stories of both, some not ever even touching coral, and some eating tons of it. my suggestion would be to just get a couple of frags of xenia or something super super cheap (sometimes even free) and see how the shrimp does with it
They're generally reef safe. Like a lot of shrimp they do need to be fed once they run out of bristle worms. If they get hungry then they'll start looking for other things to eat in the tank and a tank full of corals will get picked on.
If you keep it fed you should be fine. They don't tolerate other shrimp in your tank. That's really the only downside to them.
As long as you keep her fed you should be fine. I have had them in with corals and know a lot of other people who have as well. The only time I noticed mine touching coral was when I had not fed in a while. And even then it just sort of picked at them.
IME, they are reef safe. They will steal food from corals though. Mostly after I feed, I can watch the banded coral shrimp walk around plucking food from the coral polyps. I've never seen them actually eat corals though.
My CBS has never touched my corals. He spends most of the day hours hiding and only comes out at night. I dont feed it any differently than the rest of my fish. so he gets fed when they do. I have never seen him take food from any of my corals either
