Topic: Spawning Posted: March 01 2015 at 8:46am |
Well, it would seem that the old saying holds true even in this hobby that when the cats away the mice will play. Yesterday while on the lfs tour my Euphillia decided to spawn and spawn and spawn and spawn. Last night when I got home the tank was clouded with "stuff" alot of "stuff". Thanks to John and his better half along with my wife we were able to use nets to remove the 4 quadrillion eggs mostly attached to stuff as well as free floating. We did a 30% water change and the 100 micron socks keep plugging up about every 4 hours. Skimmer is going crazy and we'll this morning it is still very cloudy. Everything looks ok the euphillia all look very very relaxed ;) what if anything can. I do to remove "stuff" from the water column or is socks and skimmer about it? Should I be concerned about anything other then euphillia popping up everywhere? Thanks for your help.

Pics?
This is usually food for all the animals in the tank. I wouldn't worry too much about it. The biofiltration should be able to process it.

Have you ever had euphyllia spawn in your tank Mark?
Takes more than algae and live rock to clean up that gunk!

That's pretty awesome.
I'm not sure if Euphyllia spawned in any of my systems, I've had several spawns that I came upon afterwards. I've never had a spawn in my system that it couldn't handle, but then my systems over the years have usually been over 75 gals.

I have a total water volume of about 130 gallons give or take between the tank and sump minus rocks, sand, corals. I did another wc tonight and that has seemed to help the most to this point. I will be thinning my Euphillia garden over the next couple of weeks. Not looking for money just good homes. I will post pics and quantities once I get the tank back under control. I tested all parameters tonight including ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates less than 1, phosphates .07, calc 440, alk 8.1, mag 1320, salinity 1.024. Pretty darn happy with the way the tank has looked the past couple days. Oh I will not just give all the euphillia to one person fyi.

I saw it in person. It was a mass Euphyllia spawn event. Something triggered a huge spawn with every Euphyllia in his tank.
Eggs and slime everywhere. It was crazy!

Wow! I'd like to see the Euphyllia that did that! Is there a pic somewhere? May I come visit? I feel foolish for my stubbornness at not realizing how much impact that had. Always something to learn in this hobby. Aloha, Mark

We didn't take pictures. Reefer4ever isn't really in the reef porno business.
For the most part it's cleared up now. It completely saturated the carbon, and filled up filter socks faster than they could be replaced. The slime and eggs are gone now, but the water is still a bit cloudy.

Pete
Could you theoretically gather the porno ingredients and put them in a new tank for little Euphyllia to be born? Or is it more complex than that?

You technically could.
I have seen VERY few mass spawning events in the home Aquarium during my time in the Hobby. One was a rainbow bubble-tip anemone, one was fungia, this one was Euphyllia. Spawning events usually require very specific conditions which are hard to replicate in a glass box. In the case of the rainbow bubble-tip, the spawning was very successful and hundreds of the anemone grew on the rocks.
This is the first time I've seen a Euphyllia mass spawn. We will see if they make it past larvae stage and start growing on the rocks I suppose.
Long story short, yes they theoretically could grow up. I just have never personally witnessed it with Euphyllia.

Thats awesome. I hope the tank recovered from such a large load and a few baby Euphyllia come of it.

After a couple days of scrubbing and water changes the tank looks wonderful once again.
We'll see if any Euphyllia pop up on the rocks haha! Pretty sure we cleaned out most of the eggs though.

As long as the corals/fish aren't under age it is perfectly legal to post pics of reef porn. I've taken as many as I've the opportunity to take.
A huge spawn could certainly wipe out all life in a tank. A small spawn is great food for fish and clams like Mark suggests, but a large spawn will decay and pollute the tank killing everything if not dealt with quickly. It sounds like you had some good strategies to get it out of the water column. You did exactly what I would have done. Filter socks, water changes, netting it out etc. Just make sure to run good AC for the next little while if you don't already.

I ruffed up my calurpa a little bit this morning and took a few pics. This is crazy as the amount of eggs seems never ending at this point.

At first I was thinking this was unbelievable. After reading what the eyewitnesses described and after talking to Dennis last night at the meeting, all I can say is AMAZING. Thanks for sharing. The pics are great.

Thanks Mark, there were several people last night that asked if I would post some pics you included. An amazing event although the stress that it caused me I really hope it doesn't happen again.

All I can say is "Wow!"
I have been in this hobby for 38 years; never had this happen to me (except for a bristleworm spawning once)
You must be doing something right, Dennis - playing any Barry White albums near the tank?

Dennis dimms the lights down low, and makes sure his Euphyllia get a cigar afterwards.
I can attest to Dennis doing things right though. He keeps his tank in pristine order.
Dennis and I snagged rocks from live rock and reef that had a brain corals attached. After removing it from the rock, a lot of dipping, and a day in the tanks, we were amazed to find out they were rainbow brain corals. Dennis' coral had it's tentacles out and was accepting food within two days of being in his tank. It has already made an amazing recovery from being on the brink of death. A clean, well taken care of reef can do wonders.
Third mass spawn I've ever seen. Truly amazing stuff. Welcome to the reef porn business Dennis.
