Folks, I came home from the meeting last night to find my nicest acro had turned almost completely white. The night before, I noticed a couple of tips just starting to "bleach". Now the whole thing is nearly white (originally a deep greenish-purple). My other SPS are fine. What causes this? Alk is at 11.5, calcium is about 450. I'm going to see if someone can hold it for me for a little while until things calm down in my tank. I'd like to bring it by to someone close tonight if possible. Mark, Carl, anyone??? Please call me or PM. I'm just between Layton and Kaysville. As always, any advice is appreciated.

As an added bonus, if you can get it back to healthy, it is fragable.

Frag it now! If it is losing flesh, you need to frag any part that is not affected. Your frags will likely survive. If you leave it whole, you'll likely lose the entire thing - regardless of whose tank it is in.

Shane, that REALLY sucks! I did also read something at Reef Central (I know I'm a total message board hussy) about a similar, if not the same, disease. RTN Rapid Tissue Necrosis. Supposedly takes hours, not days to completely wipe out your coral. I'd be highly surprised if this guy is not a total goner by the time I get back home. It's a decent sized acro with awesome color. I could have probably gotten 10 decent sized frags out of it a couple days ago. If there is any color left on him, I will frag away, but I am anything but optomistic. This hobby is killing me! So, do I leave everything else alone, or is it time to sell all my corals? I wish I knew what I am doing wrong. Thanks for the input.

RTN and RWD may be the same disease ???

"Rapid Tissue Necrosis (RTN) is a term used by home aquarium hobbyists to describe an illness of corals kept in captivity that bears striking similarities to coral bleaching observed in the marine environment. RTN occurs most often in members of the families Pocilloporidae (Pocillopora, Seriatopora, Stylophora, Madracis) and Acroporidae (Acropora, Anacropora, Montipora, etc.). The condition is characterized by the rapid sloughing of tissue from the base of the skeleton outward which, if left unchecked, can result in coral death in a period of hours to days. The disease is highly contagious and almost 100% lethal without intervention. We use RTN as a useful laboratory model for coral bleaching in the wild and are exploring the hypothesis that RTN is due to bacterial pathogenesis. The results of this study may have wide ranging benefits to the endangered marine reefs and ecosystems."

I'm thinking about putting some RTN on my hair to see how I look as a platinum blonde.
