    Posted: November 17 2009 at 12:00pm
So - I am looking for a 30" fixture to place over my 3 chamber, 30 inch frog fish experience.  (20 gallon long divided into 3 seperate chambers).

The tank is 30" long and I plan to keep some coral, different colored macro algae and three different frog fish (or similar).  Please give me your feedback or opinion of these light fixtures:

Coralife Aqualight T5 HO  $103.99 (Marine & Reef)
  • Low profile. Dimensions without legs: 2.25" tall X 30" long X 6" wide. With legs the fixture is 3.75" tall.
  • Does not include a fan
  • Adjustable Mounting Legs included
  • Includes one 31 watt 10,0000K Daylight Lamp and one 31 watt Actinic Blue Lamp
  • Single power cord & built in on/off switch
  • Acrylic splash guard
  • Current USA ORBIT 2X65W SUNPAQ W/LUNAR & FAN $119.99 (Pet Solutions)

Create the ultimate dawn to dusk effect with the pro-grade Orbit. It packs the SunPaq Dual Daylight (10,000K & 6,700K), Dual Actinic (460nm & 420nm) and Lunar Light together in one sleek, fan-cooled fixture. Offering the leading technologies in one 24-hour lighting system that gives you one small step to take for a gigantic leap in performance. Uses Japanese style square pin bulbs.

If youre going with a 2 bulb fixture, I would look for one with individual reflectors. Like this one:

    Jeff -

I looked at that fixture as well. It only has 24w bulbs. Which means the bulbs are only 24" long.  Is that correct?

Shane, Im actually not sure on the length. I know typically T5 HO bulbs are 54 watt for 48 inch fixtures and 39 watt for 36 inch fixtures but im not sure on wattage and length for the shorter fixtures. Also I think Mike Savage is selling a nice used Tek fixture that might work. Really good price too.

My TEK fixtures are both sold. You are correct Shane 24" T5HO are 24 watt.

If it were me I'd probably go with the one that has the lunar light and 2 PC's. I believe that one 65 W PC puts out more light than one T5HO of the same length. When it came time to replace the tubes I'd use the new UVL internal reflector PC's with all the great color combinations offered. Two PC's allows 4 colors! But that's just me.Smile

Ive never used PC's so i really shouldnt even be chimming in here, but one thing I found interesting at one of the presentations at the reeffest is that PC's are now completely obsolete in germany and all the technology is going into the most efficient reflectors to up your PAR. The guy giving the presentation, I forget his name works (or worked) for Current USA and said that currrent doesnt even offer a PC fixture anymore as the industry goes toward T5's and LED's. I was going through storage the other day and found an old casette with some killer old music that I hadnt heard for years, and went to play and realised that I dont even have a casette palyer in my house anywhere. Dang! I wonder if it will be the same in 10 or 20 years from now when we find an old HQI bulb in storage?
