Topic: Sump help needed Posted: April 02 2011 at 12:23pm |
I'm looking for a sump for my 120 gallon tank. If anyone has plans on how to build one or has one available for sale let me know. Currently I have a sump but the protein skimmer octx 200 that I have is too big for the sump.

Do you want acrylic or glass? I can build any type of acrylic sump you want. If you want to do it yourself let me know and I can tell you where there is some good reading on acrylic sump building : )

Whichever is less expensive. I would think that acrylic
would be less and that would be just fine.
Currently the sump that I have is 14 inches high by 12 inches across by 24
inches long and 1/2 of it is got the bioballs in it so the protein skimmer
barely fits in that other half with no space left for connections.
21Wx45Lx29H is the space that everything will need to fit in but the limiting
factor is the door opening of this cabinet which is 17" x 27"

tcfab has made some very nice looking sumps. If you're trying to make one as cheap as possible you can go to petco and pic up a 20gallon fishtank then get squares of glass at homedepot just cut them to fit for baffles and use aquarium safe silicone to put them in. Or just as effective, a lot of people just get a nice sized toat and have an intake and a return that just goes through sand rock and algae. Guess it depends on what you want.

Hi tcfab,
I'd like to build the sump. Could you refer me to some good places on sump building?

That looks like a good one. What is a good source for buying acrylic?

Acrylic is going to be much more expensive then glass it also requires a table saw and router. You will need a table mounted router and a handheld router. You will want to table saw cut all your pieces 1/8 oversize and then router finish all your edges taking 1/16th off each side leaving you your desired dimension. Also go to Melev's site and look at the "pins" method of solvent welding acrylic, this is the best way to do it. If you try and glue saw cut edges you aren't going to get a strong joint you will also have lots of bubbles this way. Best place to buy full sheets of acrylic is Professional Plastics in Ogden.

Also I recommend using Whiteside spiral bits for cutting all your acrylic, they leave a very smooth edge for solvent welding.

Another good place is Delvie's Plastics, here is SLC, they are real nice people to work with; they have a website as well as Professional...go head and compare prices, not sure which place has the best deals. http://www.delviesplastics.com/ http://www.professionalplastics.com/

I am not sure why but everytime I buy my acrylic from Professional Plastics they sell it to me much cheaper then what their website says. Give them a call. Delvies is also a great place to buy from.
