Topic: New Clowns have Ick Posted: September 03 2011 at 9:20pm |
We just bought some new clowns yesterday afternoon and this morning noticed what appeared to be little bubbles on its skin, or more like lint. Wife noticed this afternoon that both had it, but one more then the other. The worse one is not using its right fin (a clown fish with a lame right fin, who knew), not sure if its related or coincidental.
So to double check that were doing everything ok, we did a 2 ish minute fresh water dip on them, stressful for us and them. The better one seems to be doing fine and looks ok too. The other doesnt look so good, still has the spots on her and now the black color seems to be fading in the body. Still not using the fin and is way stressed out. When the lights turned off she seemed to chill out a lot. We chopped up a clove of garlic and added it to the water, though it retrospect we may not have chopped it up enough, it was like ten larger chunks.
Looking into maybe getting a UV staralizer tomorrow, let me know if we need to do anything else. 'Capn Morgan' is going to be coming by the house already so I will also be picking his brain tomorrow too.

Do you have a quarantine tank or a fish only tank you can use? I used a product when I lived in Oregon that worked wonders and caused no issues with my inverts or fish when I had a really bad ick problem called No Ick. It worked wonders. I have heard of people using it with there corals and have had no issue but I know how much some people have invested in their tank so I would be a little cautious. Link provided below.

Your description that it looks like lint makes me think of Brooklynella disease rather than Ich because Ich is distinct white dots about the size of salt crystals. Unfortunately, there is no good treatment for Brooklynella and it usually kills. Would you be able to post a pic of the fishies and the entire tank. If we can see what you are seeing, then we can give better advice.
I would also refer you to the Reefkeeping Tip in the thread linked below called "Secrets of adding new fish...". It may give you some information about adding fish and using Garlic Oil that will help next time.
If it does end up being Brooklynella and fish die, I'm so sorry. Wait a while before adding fish again.

Ok for an update, the smaller one that we've affectionately starting calling Nemo, (Lame we know ) was looking better yesterday but not great. We fed a few extra times, but smaller amounts with garlic oil soaked flakes. As of today Nemo looks good, no dots/spots/lint. The color in it's upper back is returning and is using the right fin. Will keep you all posted on it's status.
In reply to you Mr. Peterson I will try and post some pictures, I will have to figure out how to take good underwater photos.

Please call me Mark. That's good news, but your fish are not out of the woods yet. FYI, flake food is not the best food to feed, nor is it the best way to administer Garlic Oil. Have you read the information about it in the Reefkeeping Tips below?

I have had several fish get sick and pull through. I have also had fish get sick and die. Generally it was when I medicated and did things that stressed the fish, that they died. I'm sure others have had different experiences, but I have found that when I just try to keep my tank nice and clean and keep my fish properly fed with a varying diet (different kinds of shrimp and algae flakes) that even when fish do get sick, that they tend to pull through. I would say that as long as they are still eating, just try to keep their stress low and they are most likely to pull through.
