Topic: Refugium lighting Posted: April 14 2005 at 1:19am |
In all of my reading, I have come across two schools of thought on photoperiods for refugium lighting.
1-24/7
2- reverse of the photoperiod of the main tank
I have macro alge and a frag box in my refug as well as all of the normal critters.
My question obviuosly is - What is your recomendations ?????

I'm certainly no fuge expert, but the general idea behind reverse
photoperiod lighting in the refugium is to reduce the nightly ph swing.
I run reverse photoperiod.

I run reverse too, but leave it on some days 24/7. Usually just because I forget to turn it off after harvesting.

I believe most people run RDP (reverse daylight photosynthesis) because algae need to sleep too. When I need extra nutrient uptake I'll leave it on 24 hours for a few days to kick the algae growth into high gear.
Check out the article RDP pH control and Filtration in the Feb 2002 issue of the Sea Star Online

The other day I happened upon a friend that runs RDP but had very little algae and only a 13W PC over his refugium. I hope that I was kind as I suggested that an RDP Refugium must have algae and very bright light in order to do it's job properly.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the Sea Star article. It verifiys why Im running fuges on both of my tanks. I have been running the lights 24/7 ,and the article points out that it doesnt help but to keep the power bill high. Ill time the lights and tell my wife Im being energy wise.

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
I am all for giving your refugium time to rest during the day. I am very sold on RDL.
