    Posted: May 07 2005 at 9:40pm

I just purchased a used skimmer and I need some help finding a pump. It is an emperor aquatics skimmer and is seriously like 8 feet tall. All I can find on thier website is that it needs 11 GPM @ 10 PSI and that a 3450 RPM pump motor is needed to achieve 10 PSI. I want to just call and ask Emperor Aquatics, but they would probably try and sell me a $1000 pump. Any suggestions?

The pump curve above is for the Mag Drive pumps. Not sure the specs on the RPM of the mag drives though. Any way to convert head pressure into PSI?

Something that will push 990-1360 gph... that's a freakin huge pump!!! I'm not familiar with that style; downdraft, needlwheel, venturi, etc. I would imagine that that skimmer is for around a 600 or so gl tank... for the greenhouse??? Maybe a mag 12 or an 18 if beckett style.

Its venturi.

http://www.emperoraquatics.com/commfoamfrac.phpf

I think its rated for a 1500-2500 gallon system.

I was thinking mag 18 but not sure if it can create the 10 PSI needed to function properly.

Yeah, its for the greenhouse system. I also have a huge fluidized bed filter and a 250 watt UV sterilizer that I might hook up.

Im pretty sure the fluidized bed filter needs a mag 24

Holy crud... that's some power... IMO, I've read on numorous occassions that for the best water flow through a skimmer, that the volume pumped through the skimmer be 1.5 - 2x's the total volume to be skimmed. IMO, the mag 18 should do the trick and achieve the psi needed. BTW, I also feel that it's best to over estimate the manufacturer's "max volume abilities" by 50 to 75%(if rated for 2000 gl, figure a true 1000 to 1500... of course, bio-load will also be a big issue. If you feel that you need additional foam production, there are several things you can do (DIY style) that may help to give your new skimmer a boost for a larger bioload.

Heck yea... if too powerful, you can tee off for the over flow via gate or ball valve to relieve the excess pressure... good idea Scuba and saves some $$$$. With that venturi manifold... you should be golden.

Head (in feet) = pressure (in psi) x 2.31 / specific gravity (water=1)

So 10 psi is 23.1 feet and 11 gpm is 660 gph.  None of the mag-drive pumps will work, not even the MD36.

Here's the Iwaki curves:

You're looking at either the Iwaki 70 or 100.

Ok, my fluid mechanics are a bit rusty, but it's probably "ok" to say that a foot of head is equal to 1/2 psi.  So, 20 feet of head is about 10 psi, give or take a little.  Take a look into an Iwaki/Blueline 70- they will flow about 15 gpm @ 20 feet of head pressure, according to their pump curves.  Expect $275~$300.  They use about 290 watts.

It's just a thought.

Powerful enough to run both the skimmer and the fluidized sand bed? They say the fluidized sand filter needs to have 18 GPM at 10 feet of head.

Hey BananaTropics can I make a request for updated photos of the greenhouse system, also I would be interested in hearing how the temperature does as the weather starts to warm up

Derik, sure i'll update it now. I just got back from Washington and got a bunch of cold-water inverts and algae. I'll post some pics on my "greenhouse aquarium" thread.

Dave, the pump is working great! It easily creates 10PSI for the filter with plenty of left over thats directed into the display tank. The skimmer collected about 5 gallons of brownish foam in the first 20 minutes or so. Id say my tank needed this pretty bad. Thanks to everyone for the help.
