How long is it safe to keep coral out of water during water changes?

I do a lot of water changes but haven't had coral high enough for it to matter unless I was doing 30 gallons or more until recently.  

And I mean how long can the coral be out and still stay healthy.  I don't mean how long can it stay out of water and not die.  
Indefinite hiatus from sw aquariums.

Once I have my glorious return I'll set back up the following.
50 Gallon rimless cube.
180 Gallons mixed reef paradise

Any coral can be out of the water up to 30 minutes, but be sure the lights are off otherwise the heat will really damage them.

Use your hand to splash them with tank water to extend their time out of water.
