Which of the following options would provide the best filtration and/or best benefit to a 14g nano?

1. Keep the bio balls.
2. Replace the bio balls with a mini-fuge filled with caulerpa or chaetomorpha or both.
3. Replace the bio balls with a protein skimmer.

Currently my bio load is two small false percs, a peppermint shrimp, a brittle star, snails, hermit crabs, and four assorted frags.

probably either option 2, or 3 would work great.  Most people tend to stay away from bioballs, because they are "nitrate factories".

An easy option would be to simply grow Macroalgae in the tank itself. What kind of fish are in the tank?

#2

I would think that regular water changes with a 14g would make a protein skimmer somewhat pointless.

Thanks everybody.  So I will go with the mini-fuge.  My BioCube has three filtration chambers.  The first chamber holds 2 mangroves and the Oceanic filter pad w/ carbon.

The second chamber will hold the mini-fuge, which can have up to 4 compartments.  I am thinking to put filter floss in the first, cheato in the second, chemi-pure in the third, and purigen in the fourth.

The third chamber holds a sponge, the return pump and 4 more mangroves.

Any input on this configuration would be greatly appreciated.  Also, will I need to provide lighting for the cheato?  I could also put some cheato (or other decorative macroalgae) in the main tank.

Or...

I could remove the oceanic filter pad w/ carbon and put cheato in the first chamber with the 2 mangroves.

Then the mini-fuge in the second chamber could hold filter floss in the first compartment, activated carbon in the second, chemi-pure in the third, and purigen in the fourth.

Or...feedback please

Go with option two and check out the filter media baskets at http://shop.mediabaskets.com/.

I just ordered the filter media basket for my 29 gallon Biocube, along with the submersible lights to grow chaeto. Running filter flos in the top, chaeto in the middle, and Purigen and Chemipure Elite in the bottom.
