Ok here's one for Ryan,

What do you know about T5VHO. Is going from 54 Watts to 96 Watts worth the extra power?

It is actually 54 to 80 watts and it all depends on the tank. You get about a 15% boost in PAR by overdriving.

Is the tank over 30" tall? Are you going SPS dominated with clams on the sandbed? Do you like replacing bulbs every 6 to 9 months (and 9 months is stretching it)?

If you answered no to any of those (or all) then there is no reason to overdrive T5 bulbs. Just use a good ballast, good bulbs and some good reflectors!

Hay Ryan,

I am not talking about over driving T5HO's I am talking about the new T5VHO bulbs designed to run at 95watts (sorry I missed the actual wattage by one before.) I used to think T5HO and T5VHO were the same just overdriven but after doing some research found this not to be the case.

THE T5VHO's are also supposed to give maximum lumens over a wider heat range. Phillips was specing their lamps for T5HO at 5000 lumens and T5VHO at 7200 Lumens.

From what I understand UVL is coming out with a line of T5VHO lamps. Just wondering if anyone knows any of the specifics of this new lamp?

Ya I was looking at them. They call them V-HO and they run at 54 or 85 watts. The new T5VHO fixtures I have seen don't allow you to run regular 54 watt lamps so I'm not sure if the UVL Lamps are the same.

UVL's VHO bulbs can run at either 54 or 80-85 watts. It stands for Variable High Output aka over driving the bulbs. You have to run them with an Ice Cap ballast to get that type of wattage.

Ice Cap teamed up with UVL and created their own line of bulbs that supposedly have beefed up phosphors to with stand the over driving and last longer. That has yet to be seen and the PAR on them was no better than the UVL lamps. UVL lamps have worse PAR then ATI and Gmann and some other brands out there.

This isn't anything new. These bulbs have been around for quite some time. UVL has put the VHO in the names since I can remember.

If you have some other link that shows otherwise than great but I am willing to bet you are just seeing UVL trying a new line of marketing. The bulbs will still only last about 9 months being driven to those wattages.

If you don't believe me, you are more than welcome to ask Grim Reefer over on RC.

I think your absolutely right about the UVL bulbs.

Check out this link from Grow Light Express. This is one of the few places selling the new T5VHO fixtures and lamps. The one in the link is a 6500K lamp but I understand that a variety of lamps are on the horizon.

The Solar Flare is an Aquatinics fixture I believe and runs Ice Cap ballasts in it to over drive the bulbs. The sad thing is that is doesn't out perform a High Output ATI Powermodule.
