I use about 2 cups of carbon in my sump (in a filter sock) and I'm honestly not sure how long it's effective lifespan is, so I was wondering if anyone knew how often carbon should be changed out? I've been pulling it out about every 4 weeks.

I think most people change it out monthly like you do. Salifert does make an Activated Carbon test kit that will tell you when it is exhausted. I bought on but haven't used it.

I change my every three ta four months but I will pull it out every three weeks and rinse it off and beat it on the sink to brake the carbon a little.  I don't know if it is right but it is what I do and it seems to work.
I love fish I want them all.

I change my carbon monthly just to be safe. If you're running it in a mixed reef this is especially important
