I was reading at GARF that it is suggested to use a plenum set up.  Is this just an Undergravel filter?  I have a basic store bought undergravel filter that I was not sure if I should use or not.  I have heard conflicting views on the matter.  Any help would be appreciated from a newbi.

Thanks!!!!

ShanePj,

You will definately get many, many mixed views on plenums. Same with deep sand beds, UV, ozone, lighting, proper livestock, glass or acrylic, temperature, PH, additives, calcium reactors, water, thinking, breathing, etc.

Just do your homework. I believe that they are not used much anymore for a reason. Good luck.

Hmmm....interesting topic. I'm about to try and setup a Refugium for my tank using an old 25 gallon tank I used to have fresh water fish in. That tank had a plenum in it, but I hadn't even considered whether or not to keep it in there when I converted the tank over.

Should I?

Btw, for those asking if you could use them in a fresh water tank, I had a setup that was almost self sustaining including an overflow filter and an undergravel filter (plenum) hooked to another overflow filter (hard to explain but it worked really well).
