I have some strange thing attached to my clam.  It looks like some kind of animal tooth, with white frilly filter tentacles on the end of it.  I hope I am not showing my ignorance, but just want to make sure its not a known clam/coral predator of any kind....

it looks like it may be a sea pen but i dont think so normally they are a deep water filter feeder. looks like the clams foot to me.

Can you lift the clam off of the sandbed? Is it coming out of the byssal opening? (the hole where the shells meet)

The clam has since moved and the weird thing is not attached to it, but simply coming out of the sand bed....clam has never moved in a long time....maybe it was slightly irritated by this thing

It sounds like it might be a sea pen (or a relative of one). 


I'm not 100% sure, I have only seen a few of them in captivity.

Also looks to me like the clam's foot. It can't hurt to pick it up. It feels like cartilage, like your ear. The clam may be stressed, if it discarded that.
