If you can I'd go with Tyler's skimmers. They are top of the line.

Here's the one Tyler built for me. The collection cup holds like 3.5 gallons... no joke...

I haven't used a skimmer since 1996. Just so you know, a skimmerless tank can be just as beautiful.

i have seen two tanks(nice reef tanks) run without a skimmer. one even had SPS spawn in it!! super cool. that one was set up with an ecosystems sump/refuge. i dont know if you can get them anymore but birdworld may have one for a 120.

I don't mean to offend y'all, but there is a ton about this hobby that you don't know. Feel free to call or to come by for a visit and see how it can be done marvelously without all the gadgets people try to sell you. Mark 435-229-5614 new coral farm in Murray

utahwatertoys Im not sure how long you have done this hobby but from a noobs stand point (since Im still a noob lol) I would say get one it just cuts down on more worries for me knowing I have a back up. People like mark have been doin this for yrs and can look at his tank and almost know exactly what is wrong. I just think it is a smart thing to do IMO.

I need all the automation that I can get my hands on. Later on as I get used to it I might consider setting up a tank where I can go without training wheels.

I paid around $300 for my skimmer 10 years ago. If Tyler can get you one for less, jump on it. For what it's worth- I will never run a tank without a skimmer!

It's fascinating to me that rarely do people who think them indispensable have ever set up a system to run without one.
Just because the stuff they remove smells bad, does not mean it is bad. One organisms waste is another's food.

In my 16 years of reefing, I have ran my tanks with and without skimmers. In that time, I have found it much easier to run with a skimmer. I also notice I am able to stock many more fish than I would be able to without a skimmer.

Mark, not trying to start an argument, but what exactly does "there is a ton about this hobby you all don't know" mean exactly.... I mean how can one not take offense to that
I mean I am sure nobody, not even you, can copy the ocean perfectly... that is all we are trying to do, and guess what, there is a million differnt ways and a million differnt combonations to reach the same goal.
To me it sounds like he wants automation, and all the gadgets. So I don't really think he is being sold anything. Me personally I love automation and how easy(you can call it lazy if you want) it makes this hobby, I don't have to even touch my tank but once a week, but I do cause I love to.... but knowing if I am gone for a week it will be fine, and that I can check and change things from my phone anywhere in the world. And if there is a problem, I see it, and can get somebody over there that knows what they are doing.
You say you can run a tank without a skimmer, sure you can. You can also run it without activated carbon. You can also run it without sand too. For me its my crutch incase "I" screw something up.... I mean can you do everything if you are missing a foot, sure just makes it harder.
All I am saying mark, is nothing in this hobby is set in stone. And why would somebody try and talk someone out of something that is beneficial for their tank, even if its not your way. Removing proteins and adding more air to a tank is very beneficial.
Not to mention that if everybody had the same setup, you know how boring that would be.

Well I guess Id have to say I understand where Mark is coming from
I think it's possible to run no skimmer, but you need to devote a lot of
water volume to a fuge area, and keep the bio load in the display low
I also liked how this other person put it: "IMO a skimmer is like automatic transmission and power breaks are to driving. Do you need it? No. Does it make reef keeping much easier? YES!"
But then again there's tanks like Brads (Tileman) where hes loaded with fish, if you take the skimmer off that tank your in trouble for sure
I think skimmers help make balancing livestock in a tank alot easier.
