Topic: Why would all my snails die suddenly? Posted: November 03 2008 at 4:14pm |
Just came home for lunch. Every snail I can see, all varieties, are on their back. It's not just a few, it's every snail. Some are dead, some appear still alive but upside down and not looking good. I have to get back to work so can't test right this minute but looking for thoughts on this to start. Fishies look fine, corals too. Did notice a large rock of GSP secreting something? I'll test this evening, but concerned for the short term. Thanks!

Yeah, I was thinking that. What would cause this though? This is an established 2 yr old tank. Could say a large Pacific Turbo dying cause a large enough spike? All the fish are accounted for. I haven't added any new fish in over a year.

I think a large turbo could really stress the system. When they die they REALLY STINK!

75gal with a 30 gal sump. I have all kinds of hermits, in different sizes. Seems unlikely that even a large Turbo death would cause this kind of deal, but Mike is right. When they go they really stink I do have an Ammonia test kit so i'll start there. It's just weird....

Ive noticed if you dip corals in lugos solution and do not rinse very well snails will die off a little or lay on there back. From my experience a large water change and carbon fixed this.

I don't believe it's Ammonia either, not in an established tank. I suspect something else, but to be sure I need some information. Certainly one snail death usually does not cause this kind of problem, so I'm ruling out a domino effect, but would like to know if these snails started showing signs of low energy within the last week. That's question #1. #2 I need to see a pic of the tank, the refugium and a pic of some of the snails would help too. #3 After testing ammonia, please test PO4. #4 Has anything changed in this tank in the last 1-2 months, including new additions? #5 salinity and temperature? #6 any foreign objects or possibly foreign chemicals lately? #7 how well has the Refugium been doing; stunted macroalgae growth? And since it's been two days, I hope that you have removed all the dead snails

I've seen people add 50 snails, they all die that day... due to low alkalinity.
But I don't think I've seen people who already had 50 snails just up and lose them all in one day.
Very odd,

Mark,
For question above. No. Everything seemed normal until I noticed on my lunch hour a couple of days ago. To update it appears not ALL of the snails seemed to perish. Still can see 3-4 moving around. I would say 90-95% did die though, including all 6-7 Turbos. All snails in my sump (aprox 4-5) died as well. #2 I need to see a pic of the tank, the refugium and a pic of some of the snails would help too.
-I'll work on that. Need to find camera first.
#3 After testing ammonia, please test PO4.
-Tested for ammonia and didn't get anything, I will test for PO4 later tonight.
#4 Has anything changed in this tank in the last 1-2 months, including new additions?
-No, not really. I add snails/crabs regularly. Maybe every 2 months. Just added 10/10 about a week ago. Started dosing Lugols once a week (3-4 drops) about 5 weeks ago. Nothing else.
 #5 salinity and temperature?
1.025 / 78-80
#6 any foreign objects or possibly foreign chemicals lately?
Nope
#7 how well has the Refugium been doing; stunted macroalgae growth?
I don't have one right now. Just a sump. I have (had, still battling) a slight Asparagopsis taxiformis problem. Ask (I think) Cory Price what a joy that *^$%$ is. It was infesting my Macro so bad I took it all out about 6 months ago. It was literally suffocating it. Never got into the display though, maybe because I keep a healthy supply of crabs, snails, etc? Anyway, I removed all Macro, upped the Pacific Turbo ante by several (the only proven grazer of the stuff), and for the most part have gotten rid of it. The only place I see it now is in the return overflow chamber in spots nothing can get to it. I'm pretty much resigned to always having some, but at least I can control it. Afraid to put Macro back in though.
And since it's been two days, I hope that you have removed all the dead snails
Yes - the Turbos anyway, and a few of the others I could reach.
My pea-brained theory. Because of #7 I usually keep a couple of Turbos in the overflow chamber. I'm wondering if one may have died and fouled up the water (in the overflow). There is poor circulation inside the overflow. Don't know if that means anything, just a thought.
Otherwise tank looks fine today, fish ravenous, etc. Still, very odd. Wondering if it's ok to start adding snails again.

I would add snails as long as there is something for them to eat. If they die as well then something definatly has gone array.

Sorry about the Asparagopsis stuff. I hate that stuff with a passion.
I agree with what's been said and guessed. It could be a number of things- any other inverts dying?
