I'm setting up a 75 gallon tank and just want to know if I should use tap water or RO water.

Assuming you also have a sump, I'd guess you need at least 100 gallons of salt water. You could make life a little easier on yourself and pay one of the local LFS to deliver salt water to your tank for your initial start up! I'm doing that for my new tank this week.

No tap water wont let your tank cycle fast, tap water has other stuff in the water that you dont want in your tank.. I promise you go with RO...

Some cities tap water is suitable. Depends where you live. For the guarantee of good water RO is the way to go.

You'll get a lot of debate on RO vs. Tap. But I use RO b/c I don't know how the water treatment plant treats the water. With all the LR, sand, fish and corals I'm not about to risk it. But if your having no ill effects then keep on keeping on. BUt for a new aquarist with learning the ins and outs I'd recommend RO until they get a handle on things.

Huge difference where I live. Have you had your tap water tested to see what is in it?

When I was in Sandy, I used Tap water. Every once in a while I would get some algae, but never beyond control.
Then I moved to South Jordan...I was lazy and filled it with tap water...Sigh. I ended up with water so green you couldn't see the rockwork. I ended rnning a UV sterilizer to clear it up and I purchased an RO unit.
Not all cities use the same water...Even within a city, you will get areas that have better water than others.
Most LFS will test your water, either free or very cheap. I had my water in South Jordan tested and it was good, but there was some measurable TDS's...Doesn't take much.
Long post...If you are investing thousands of $$$$ for a reef tank, spending $100 on an RO unit is nothing.

True, some cities can have adequate enough water.. When i started i did tap water... And came back with poor results.. I had cyano break out and a lot of algae, i then drained 90 percent of it and restarted and turned out great..

want green algae? Use tap water. I have had different algaes in my tank, but that tuft green stuff has never really been there besides maybe the initial cycling.

I've seen how the water is treated through my job I wouldn't put all those chems in my tank. Use ro and you won't regret it later
