Topic: Melenarus Wrasse Acting Weird Posted: July 28 2012 at 8:33pm |
My tank has been set up for about 8 months... Everything always seems perfect! 75 gallon, all params are in check besides alk being a little low, but nothing out of the ordinary... My melenarus wrasse was doing fine this morning... And when i got home later in the day... He was swimming vertical and not using his back half at all. Also his tail almost looks as if it was burnt... Turned a little black... Any ideas? Trying to get a pic, but the little booger still swims fast... Thanks...

Recently Added a blue jaw trigger, but he is very docile and skiddish... Although my two clowns have been chasing others around the tank. Other than that, nothing new... Ammonia ~ 0 Nitrite ~ 0 Nitrate ~ <5 Phosphate ~0 Ph 7.9 (I know a little low... Slowly bringing it up) DKH ~ 80 ppm Calcium ~ 420 Salinity 1.025 Im really only concerned with alkalinity.. But i would think that would effect the corals more so than a wrasse. My tank always seems good, im even growing dendropthya wich i am surprised by... But yeah i was just stumped when i saw him today acting like that.

Do you have a coral that may have stung him?

So i was thinking about some of the possibilities and Mollie allready mentioned corals, but do you have a heater in your display?? If so and its one that suctions to the glass, your wrasse may have tried to squeez behind it and got stuck for a while, possibly small burn or just hurt the fin badly...... or do you have any strong filters or pumps that he may have hurt his fins on? Theres a couple things that may have gone wrong, but please post a pic of your display set up and the wrasse him self so we can see everything and maybe find out what happened to the poor little guy!

Nope everything is in the sump, nope no power heads or nothing that could of harmed him. It's nearly impossible to get a good pic of him he still swims fast just swims weird. I'm not to worried about him, I was just curious he will snap out of it I'm sure. And melenarus wrasses are strong swimmers. Doubtful he got injured by a power head. My guess is he got fond of some coral, took a nip, and it stung him on the way down. Either that or has a parasite. Planning on taking him out soon if I can catch him and put him in qt
