Topic: RBTA Food Posted: August 31 2008 at 12:12pm |
I'm curious as to how and what you all feed your RBTAs. I got an RBTA and a Pink-Tipped Hatian last week and my hatian eats VERY well! He can eat an entire cube of Krill and stretches out to nab it from the long tweezers I used to feed it. The RBTA closes up the second I get near it so I'm not sure if he doesn't like the krill, is scared of the tweezers, isn't hungry or what but I'm worried that he's not eating. The RBTA is already bulbed at the end and attached to a rock so I'm thinking he's probably happy but why won't he eat?
From everything I've read, if perc's haven't hosted the RBTA you need to supplement feed them.

Where did you hear that? I'd love to read more about that theory.

I've fed silversides and krill primarily, I'm guessing the reasoning behind the clown theory is that if a clown is hosting the anemone that it is going to be feeding it, my clowns all seem to feed there anemones very well. I've even heard of maroon clowns dragging cleaner shrimp and peppermints over and feeding them to there anemones....

Thanks for posting the question because I was just going to ask the same thing. For all it's worth my experience has been with a gbta I bought a while ago about the size of a coke bottle bottom. I've been feeding it chopped krill through a syringe and long tube and it loves it. It does ball up though when I squirt the stuff but I just think its eating it because when he goes back to normal there is no more krill.
I did however recently buy a much larger RBTA and have been feeding him with the same stuff but I've been worried that it is not getting enough and also wanted to see what you guys feed them and where I can pick up "Silver Sides" because my LFS doesn't carry them.
Oh and you mentioned that you feed them cubes... you thaw them out right?

I feed my unknown silversides. I should say that I put them in the tank and momma clarke takes them home to the anenome.

When you say "entire cube of krill" is that cube still frozen?
Could be the RBTA is just reacting to the coldness of the cube.
If that is the case, try defrosting a cube of krill completely and then using a turkey baster and squirting the krill onto the RBTA
I have fed my anenomes (defrosted) frozen scallop, krill, shrimp and even shelled crawfish and they seem to love them all. Silverside are OK as long as they are either small (1" or smaller) or you cut them up into small pieces.
Be sure you don't feed your anenomes too often; I'd suggest a once a week feeding is plenty. In fact, you actually don't have to target feed most nems at all - especially if you have adequate lighting.

I fed mine table shrimp! about 1/4 inch cubes. It would devour and be ready for more in just a few minutes. Very cool to feed. I also caught mine eating chaeto a few times--Whatever--a vegetarian anemone. Ha ha.

I too am curious that "everything" read said to feed them. No offense intended, but sometimes I wonder where in the world are people coming up with this stuff. A small piece of raw shrimp every 1-2 weeks is what my anemones get.

Let's face the facts. Some perc's are very generous and do in fact feed their host very well. Let's just say that they are good at sharing. Other percs are hogs and don't even allow their host a chance. I think perhaps that the messier eater the perc is, the more the anemone will get.
That said, my cute little percs would "feed" his anemone once in a blue moon. I always fed my anemone. Besides--why error on starvation.
Besides--hand feeding is so much funner!

My wife has a keen eye for noticing when the clowns feed the BTA's.
Myself, I love to show visitors how the Condy snags my fingers and won't let go. I ask them if they would like to do it but noone takes me up on it. I also like placing my fingers in the anemones in the Ca tidepools. Maybe I'm weird.
