Topic: update on tiger cucumber! Posted: March 13 2014 at 4:36pm |
so, I found my tiger cuc today not in the main display but in the area where the return pump is and the heater! he was in between the heater and the wall just sitting there. I shut off the power, moved the heater from the back to the main display and grabbed my coral tongs and lifted him out from the back to the front. I noticed that it has a great big bubble on the side of its body!!! the bubble is clear and you can see inside it to the cucs body. I'm super nervous about what happened and what will happen to it. Any thoughts? It's in a tank solo except for a few snails and LR and the temp is 76. All other params are normal except for ph. Anyone with a biocube knows how the ongoing battle with ph and a tank with a cover goes.

I would get rid of him IMMEDIATELY! I lost 35 fish 2 weeks ago to my cuc getting into a pump and letting his toxic chemicals into the tank! While you sound like you don't have any fish, your water will have to be take care of to get it out before adding fish.

With his injury I would be very careful. I keep them in all my tanks but as Troy said if they get injured they are deadly.

Yes faith. Be careful. I would take him out and put it in a separate tank. But if you have nothing really in that tank you could just leave him and just make sure to test before you put any fish in. If he does live you will be fine. If he dies do a water change (big one) and run carbon.

Sorry to hear of the trouble. I agree with the suggestions above. I'd find it a new home. Personally, I would not keep a large sand sifting sea slug like a Tiger Cucumber in any tank with less than 6 square feet of sand bed. They are voracious eaters and can get to be around 2+ feet in length. I would suspect that your Cuke went looking for food because it was very hungry. While exploring the shallows in Hawaii, I saw Tiger Cukes poking out from under boulders, searching the sand for food. Each Cuke had it's own boulder it apparently lived under. Each was stretching out one and a half feet in all directions from under its boulder. Aloha, Mark

So, you won't believe this. He split! I now have 2 cucs (albeit with not fully healed ends just yet) What am I supposed to do with two 1-1/2 in cucs?!

LaRue, I had no idea that after all this bubble on the side/spilling guts thing that it would split but it did!I wont sell it for a while though bc I want to make sure that it heals all the way up and is nice and pretty before I make any changes in its environment. Lucky me that it didn't die!

I say let them heal up and sell one. I think they are very cool. I have one in each of my tanks.

Awesome that it did not die but became two. Splitting is not unheard of with this cuke and other slugs in our tanks. Back in the day, we actually had a Hermit Race as part of the club meeting. This is Fast Eddie.

I'll eat him if you don't want him. They are great with black bean and tofu.
