Topic: New, but excited. Posted: July 14 2011 at 4:31am |
Well I finally have decided it is time to venture into a hobby that I have always wanted to try. I do have to admit this is due to another local car forum that I belong to. A member posted up pictures of his recent purchase. I have a good deal on a setup I am getting from a friend at work and really think it is to good to pass up. When I have more details on the setup I will be posting them up. Bare with me because I am new and have TONS of questions. I've been doing a lot of reading, but that will only get you so far. I have already learned that I know nothing that I thought I may have thought I knew. And when I read one thing, it just seems to bring me to something else that I need to read. I am planning on starting with a reef tank. Oh the tank is a G.. And like I have mentioned previously I will post the details as I get them. I have not even began to start setting things up yet. I think I talked her and her husbands ears off and rattled them with a lot of questions. And so far can say that people seem much more eager to help and talk you through things on this forum, compared to the car forums that I belong to. I will be in the market for some live rock and various other pieces to start the tank off. I am going to try to have as much live rock and sand as possible to start the tank off with to help get the ball rolling. And less down time to have some fish. I will get pictures up and going as soon as possible. And really will be looking for advice, tips, tricks, and and pointers. I am starting this because I have always enjoyed watching my aquariums. I find it to be relaxing and a great way for myself to relieve stress. I will be in the market for some live rock, mushrooms, and frags here in the near future. So if you have some for sale let me know. Any tips and advice before I start getting the tank setup please feel free to chime in.

Great to have you here! I'd check out some other tanks in your area, maybe spend a Saturday in the Ogden/Layton/Roy area visiting houses.
Welcome!

Thanks! I'll have to get a hold of people here really soon. I work a crazy schedule, but will do my best to get around and see various setups. I'm planning on stopping at aquatic dreams this afternoon before I head to work to look around and get some ideas. All the different types of coral and what not have been a bit overwhelming so far.

Take it from a recent newbie.. Patience.. Patience is key.. Just when you think you've been patient enough, wait a little longer.. Welcome to the hobby.. It's been a great experience for my family so far..

Welcome! As Adam recommended I'd also encourage you to stop by local tanks and get a feel for what you like. Also do LOTS of research. Read, read, and read some more. Learn everything you can about aquarium water chemistry, how it works and why it works. Also make sure to read up on all your proposed livestock and make sure you can meet their living requirements before buying them, and avoid impulse buys. It is very tough, but patience really is the key to being successful. Again welcome to WMAS!!! We're glad o have you here!

I am already reading a ton, still looking for more sites. I have already been looking on various sites at coral, inverts, fish, and seeing if they are all compatible. I've been writing a lot of the stuff I like down and am hoping to run it by others to see what they think.
I really would like to find a site to just read. The pictures of various fish, corals, etc... Distract me to a certain extent.
I have no huge plans for big fancy expensive fish or coral to start with. I do not think it is a good way to start my experience in SW. Any help would be greatly appreciated when I start getting things going.
