Thought I'd also bring this thread back from the dead. I have seen another method that would work pretty good. It is actually similar to the ideas already expressed.
The idea is to have your main drain line from your overflow box regulated by a gate valve...as stated before. This allows you to let the water level inside the drain pipe be up as high as necessary to quiet the drain (possibly even up to the overflow level). So while this isn't a new idea...the twist I would add is to have ANOTHER safety drain line in your overflow box that is higher than your main drain. So this pipe will basically sit dormant and won't be used unless your main drain clogs up somehow and the water level in your overflow raises enough to start draining into the safety drain. Also..since the safety drain has no gate valve or durso then it will be very loud...giving you a clear indication that something is wrong with your tank like a snail caught or just too much build up inside your main drain line. I think this would give you a very safe and silent drain pipe.
The negative to this method is of course that you have to run an extra "unused" drain line parallel to your main drain. However...if you're running through walls then it wouldn't be that big of a deal I guess.
