Topic: skimmer not working well Posted: March 21 2005 at 1:57pm |
Hello all
I have a Red Sea Prizm deluxe skimmer that is not working well, I cleaned the whole thing, tried to adjust everything, but it just seems to not be working and if I increase the water flow to much it fills the cup in a few minutes anyone have any ideas, about what to do.
Thanks

My prizm sucks too. I can get it to pull some pretty black water but it pumps a crapload of bubbles into my tank. remedied this by sewing a pouch of polyfilter that fits over the return. ugly as heck though this algae covered pouch hangin in my tank. and the thing sounds like a 17th century TB ward. Did you just install it? took mine a couple of days to start producing well.

How long have you been running it?
It usually takes skimmers a week or two to "break in". After the break-in period you should be able to adjust it easier.

How big is your tank? and what do you have in the way of fish? I had the same skimmer for the first year and was never satisfied with it. The best thing I ever did was buy a good in sump skimmer. If you have a sump and have a lot of fish I would keep your eye out for a good skimmer , new or used, they go up for sale here quite often when people sell their tanks. I would suggest a Euro-reef or an ASM skimmer, but thats just my opinion. It made a world of difference in my tank compared to the prizm.

My tank size is 24 gallons, I only have a 3 stripe damsel, and a yellow tailed damsel, two green stripe mushrooms, buttons polyps, small green star poylps, and a small zoo, and of course the clean up crew. unfortunaly no sump so it had to be a hob, I wish I had a sump,

My research has found you don't need a skimmer on a tank that big...
Just weekly water changes... Maybe 5 gallons or more a week.
It will do more than a skimmer on a tank that size.

I ran the tank without a skimmer for about a year but and it seemed to do okay, but most of my bad levels like nitrate got better, with the addition of the skimmer so it did seem to help a little bit in that regard. I do weekly h20 changes of 3 gallons but maybe I could increase that a little bit.
