Topic: hob filters Posted: March 26 2005 at 2:12pm |
I am new to this and I am starting a 29 gallon reef tank. Can I use hob for filtration ? If not what do I need to get to set up filtration ?
Thanks

I dont know what some of the more experienced member would say but I have been running a 24 gallon tank with a hob filter and skimmer for almost 2 years now, its a marine land with the bio wheel, it is supposed to turn over 170 gallons per hour. seems to work okay. but maybe you could go a little bigger.

there is nothing wrong with HOB filters. Everyone has a differant way of doing things. I have a HOB on my 10 gallon and it works great and has for nearly 3 years. In my opion I prefer mostly natural filtration such as refugium, live rock and plenty of live sand.
The HOB will remove detritus and provide some circulation. Just make sure an keep the filter media clean.
My 2 cents

I dont think you would have a problem if you get one like The Kid, that has a bio wheel and will turn your water over at least 6 to 10 times an hour. Like pistonfister said, the best filtration is natural, LR & LS I have used an Emperor 280 and an Emperor 400 before. I still have the 280 on my freshwater tank and it's 5 years old now.

I use a HOB on my sump to run carbon and it works great, it also picks
up some free-floating detrius. The way my sump is set up it makes
adding things (like water from a water change, 2 part carbon, and such)
to a high flow area easy. Most of my high flow areas are very
hard to get to.

Do it!
Many have had good luck using HOB filters. A friend here in Brigham City has one of the best looking small reefs I have seen. He runs PC lights and a HOB filter. No sump, no skimmer - just simple. I think he would have a difficult time maintaining sps corals, but leathers and clams do awesome!

I just took my HOB off of my 30 gal last week. I miss it. I don't think it did much for filtration but it was awesome for circulation.
