Topic: What works best? Posted: April 03 2005 at 2:11pm |
I have a 29 gallon tank but I am in the process of upgrading to a 65g tank. Right now I just have the normal hang-on carbon filter for my tank and want to move everything down under into a sump but I am new at this hobby and don't know what I need to have good filtration. I have been told about a wet dry system and also a sock system. Can anyone please tell me which is the best way to go and what would be needed to go that way? Right now it is just fish but I plan on putting corals in soon.

Richard , if you are anywhere near the Murray area, you are more than welcome to come by my house and see my system. My tank is 65 gallons also and has been setup for two years now. I could also tell you what not to get , because I've already experienced it. . Come on by and check it out.

I also agree that a refugium is the best way to go, but...it isn't necessary. A beautiful reef aquarium can be grown without refugium or skimmer. LS and LR are the most important items, along with ample lighting and plenty of circulation, IMO.
Check out this thread for important info about starting a reef tank Tank setup - what newbies should know
Also, if possible, choose a tank that has more depth front to back than a typical 55(10"). If you already have the 65 (is this just taller than a 55?) then just go with it, but if you are still planning, I strongly suggest a 75 gal. It works best for a reef tank, without getting so large that it's expensive to fill with coral, etc. This is my opinion.
