Today I noticed a lot of strange things happening with my tank. One thing was some of my macro algae had turned clear. When I went to remove the peice of macro algae it fell apart into nothing. What could have caused this to happen?

If its dissolving then it's definitely importing nutrients (and if it's caulerpa, it might be introducing toxics).  Algaes will grow until nutrients become limiting to growth and then it will crash.  Harvesting more algae more frequently will help to keep this from happening again.  Also, make sure you have good water flow through the algae bed.

(you shouldn't have to worry about phosphates being released back into the water since macro algaes don't incorporate them... just kidding, inside joke , sorry.  You will likely see an increase in phosphates and/or nuisance algaes)

Its a large fern algae. I got it from Pistonfister who got it from fishman dan. I do not have a large amount of macros growing I have less then 2 handfuls. I have great flow through my refugium. I also protein skimmed about 1.5 cups of dark brown almost black water in the last 48 hours.

That large fern dissolved on me too. I only had a single strand of it so I didn't worry. I wonder if Fishman Dan has a higher nutrient level than we do?

I had that suff all over my rocks, it took over my tank.. But one day It all died all of it I was so happy.. But after a few days every thing looked really bad.. I tested my tank and My Ammonia and Nitrates where very High.. So i got some live stuff to eat it away from the store and did a water change like 25% And it worked.. Now it is coming back.. But It will do the same again...
Go 4x4 It!
