a couple of weeks ago our skimmer was outputting a lot of micro bubbles into the tank which were too small to rise to the surface and just flowed around the tank with the current. The bubbles were oming out a tube near the air intake pump so we blocked it. This worked and thebubbles disappeared. Now a few weeks later and the bubbles are back. This time though they're coming out of the main output ... where the water flows back into the tank, and again just flowing round on the current instead of rising to the top.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of this?

Usually that problem occurs when the water is flowing too fast through the skimmer. Try reducing the flow. If that doesn't work, try to reduce the air bubbles /amount of air sucked in by the pump.

Adjusting both the water flow and the air supply is probably going to give you the best solution.

If you can't easily reduce the water flow, reduce the amount of air. You can buy a thumb screw to control the airflow at any LFS. This may be easier than trying to throttle the water flow.

You could also try to run the return water through some filter floss before it enter the tank. I realize with HOB this is a bit more problematic.
