The key for me is automation. Right now I am away from my tank for 10 days and it basically takes care of its self. When I get home next week I'll have to take a razor blade to the glass to clean it up but that's about it. To tell you the truth my tank generally looks better when I leave it alone for a while than when I am tinkering with it daily.

Send me a PM if your interested in ways to take some of the PITA factor out of the tank by automating some of the daily tasks. I don't really want to hijack this thread.

I am assuming your skimmer is located near you overflow output and that the bioballs are closer to the return side of the sump. Am I correct?

If you are set you  up so that your water is running through the bio ball section just before hitting the return, then yes, ditch the bioballs and you might consider using the bioball section to hold a couple of media bags of carbon in there instead... this way, you have carbon filtration without having to hook up a seperate reactor or canister filter.

If you had a larger capacity skimmer I's say skip the fuge but I think you will be fine with it in the center section in your case.

I'm confused why people say skip the fuge. They are very easy to take care of, have tons of benefits, and I can't think of a downside.
The only time I would go with a skimmer in place of a fuge is when I only had room for one or the other and I wanted a fish only system heavily stocked with big fish.

With most systems there are going to be trade offs because of limited space and resources. I know that if I had the space and budget I would have a lot more systems in place on my tanks. I don't think anyone would argue that the fuge is of no value but there are plenty of cases where a choice has to be made between a fuge, or skimmer and even sumpless. Fortunately there are ways to make all of them work.

I used to run my skimmer for only a few hours a day and it would still pull out almost the same amount of stuff. The only reason I wanted to run it less was because of the pods and stuff that get taken out by the skimmer.
