Topic: Case of the standing starfish w/pics Posted: August 06 2009 at 2:39pm |
Has anyone ever heard of a sand sifting star standing up on all it's legs as tall as it can...while not leaning against anything? ...very strange behavior...
What is he doing?

I did take a photo...but it's at home on that computer. Imagine him standing on his tip toes with his body up in the air...very strange.

Wouldn't he be "standing on his tip toes with is body up in the..." WATER? If he is in a tank without water and truly standing in air it might explain some pretty weird behaviors. Haven't seen that one before. Crazy, and cool. Hopefully it isn't from stress of some sort.

I'm going with yoga...he's getting in touch with his inner chi...
As far as waiting for prey...I would generally agree...however he moves slower than a snail so I'm not sure he'd be able to catch anything.

I saw a starfish at MSM that had a 2" fish pressed under it against the glass. The fish managed to slip free after about 3 minutes after I saw it. I did not see the starfish make the "catch", but it was one of the strangest things I have seen. The poor fish was looking at me like "Do something already!"

Here is a photo I snapped just as it was escaping. It looks like it might be some sort of hawkfish.

Saw a picture of a starfish SPAWNING, as it was all arched like yours. Any record of a sand sifting starfish trying to reproduce in captivity? Could be it.....

Jamison had a green serpent star that would do the very same thing, and I always though that it was waiting for prey to be under it.
