While snorkeling out by cancun (on one of the islands) I found it very interesting where I saw a bunch of Brain Corals. At one beach we stopped at it was partially rocky but mostly sand and about 10-20 feet out the bottom was completely covered with some sort of blade algea. While snorkeling out in this 6-7 foot deep water I occationally ran across some corals. One of the more common ones I ran across were a brown brain coral. I didn't dare try to pick up any of them or touch them for fear of any local athorities but I found it interesting that they were just growing among the weeds not appearing to attach to anything.   Also on the beach near the hotel I found quite a few brain coral skeletons and each of them had a very smooth underside meaning that they were never attached to a rock.

One last interesting observation that I noted was that while scuba diving out on cozumel I didn't notice a single brain coral like the ones in the weeds. There were plenty of maze corals and moon corals, but no brain corals.

Interesting, thanks for posting!  We hope to go diving very soon.  What's your favorite dive spot?

In cozumel? We went and dove at 2 spots. Our groups favorite of the 2 was at paridise reef which was about 45 feet deep and right next to the cruise ship docs (just as you come out of the harbor). I don't remember the other place it was left of the harbor a ways and it was ok but it the current was much stronger and it was more like a rock outcropping here and there instead of one continious reef.

Other than cozumel I have olny dove in California(beach dives) and here in Utah (for my certification).
