Topic: Frogspawn Head Ejection -Self Propagation Posted: July 30 2004 at 4:00pm |
Is this weird or what?!
I woke up in the morning last week to find that my healthy frogspawn had somehow cleanly ejected one of its four heads. The night before, it looked perfectly happy, then in the morning there was a white skeleton where the head used to be...
I found the head upside-down in a different area of the tank...
I turned it over, and by day 2 it still looked like it was doing okay...
It's now been seven days and both mom and baby appear to be doing fine! I think the baby's going to live!
So strange! Has anyone else had this happen? I searched on the web and in my books and couldn't find anything about this.

I have heard that LPS's will "eject" a head when conditions are unfavorable. However - doesnt really seem to be in this case. I am with Jon, cool - but odd.

Today's the first day that the baby's completely opened up! It's also starting to attach to the rubble I placed next to it! So cool!
Hmmm... Unfavorable conditions? I have neglected my tank a little more than normal lately. I guess I should have checked ALL of my water parameters when that happened. Around the time it happened, I did notice that my heater was running a little hot and that my alkalinity and calcium were both rather low. Oh, and actually, I had let the salinity reach about 1.027 - nearly the death zone! That's never happened before! (Increased evaporation maybe since the tank was hotter) I corrected that last one pretty quickly. Maybe those conditions were enough to make it want to eject to survive? Two 5-gal water changes later and after pruning out nearly 2/3 of my overgrown xenia, everything's back to normal.
If I had a small extra tank, I'd do some experimenting. This was pretty interesting!

Very cool that you have a new little frogspawn. Interesting!! I'm glad everything went back to normal so quickly, too. I'll bet mom & baby will grow like crazy for you.

My hammer did the same thing a while back. I dont think that the conditions in my tank were unfavourableat all as the coral was growing rapidly and in great shape. The candy cane I have has also dropped small frags like your frogspawn. It is in the process of dropping another small piece. i will try to tank a snap shot of that and post it.

Diana, I suggest you slip a nice piece of LBTR (Lake Bonneville Tufa Rock) underneath it so that it grows onto that instead of the shifting sand. If you need a small rock, call me, I'll deliver. I'd like to see that sponge in your tank anyway.

Could this be the first time this phrase has been coined!?
I think you just made history Mark!

Yes it can if there is some flesh that survives. The other day I was given a FS cutting that broke in half when it was fragged. I was going to superglue it back together, but instead tore it into two pieces with some flesh on both sides. Both pieces are shocked but opening up and look like they're gonna make it.
