The tips of a tricolor acro and an orange plate are very slowy turning white over the past month or so. They are 3" and 5" below the top of the water respectively. The only things I can think of that are causing this could be from adding carbon once a month, turning my skimmer off for a day twice a week, they are too close to the MH, or that bulbs are going bad and are starting to burn these select corals (they are ushio 250 bulbs and are 10 months old @ 10 hrs/day). I have around 30 different species of sps in my tank and these 2 seem to be the only ones affected.  Temp of tank is around 82.  MHs were bought as a set from Premium Aquatics and it came with the standard PFO ballast.

Here are some pictures. The orange plate looks better than it actual is.

Why?

How far off of the water are the bulbs?

they are too close to the MH, or that bulbs are going bad and are starting to burn these select corals

That would be the probable cause, IMO.

I'm guessing temperature.  How confident are you that you temp doesn't get over 82 F during the day?

Are those bubble on your acro? If so, do you know why there are bubbles on your acro? Just curious... I've had red slime choke out corals before, and it seems like if you have red slime, you typically have bubbles. (not that your pic shows any obvious red slime) Just a thought.

Carl - I add carbon to give me chemical filtration and help against all the chemical warfare that goes on in my tank.

Reptoreef - I'm thinking the same thing.  That the bulbs are going bad.  Is there anyway to tell if the bulbs are bad?

Jon - I have a digital thermometer that I check throughout the day.  I also have one of those stickers.

Jamison -  I'm not too worried about that.  It has been coming and going and I don't think it is causing any problems.  Thanks for the thought though.

no .. but it sure would be nice if the club did.  i think i started a thread about this a while ago... maybe if some other members suggest it we could get one. i've been tempted to get one myself but it is hard to justify the cost with myself using it.

All in good time. Adam will get on it when there's enough interest to justify it, I'm sure... really sorry I missed the mtg. Just got off the phone with Shane H and he really talked it up. BTW coreyk, Shane's on his way, here, to drop off the zoas... I'm sure they'll be awesome!!!
