It's weird... I have some brown xeniea and it is taking off. I had another peice get mad cuz I put it under a rock for a few days (low light) and I moved alot of stuff around. I have some silvertip (basically dead) and some pom-pom that keeps looking worce and worce. I have golden pearls. Feed them once a week trying to feed directly on top of the corals. I have zoo's (great and really great) a leather... Seems ok... christmas tree worms (good) But the better xeniea is doing crappy.... WHY? I have heard that some people grow it like a weed, others cant keep it. WTF?
80 gallon tank with tons of freshly introduced calurpa and a two week old via-aqua skimmer (doing a decent job ) 2 96 watt 10000k PC's added monday and 4 55 watt 2 10k 2 15k actinic been there a long time. tons of rock and sand ext. Tank is 8? months old...

Sky, the skimmer could be the culprit here. It depends on effective it is. Xenia seem to need iodine and calcium and magnesium. Sometimes the skimmers will remove trace elements and beneficial stuff. Check your iodine and mag first. Keep us posted/updated. Do you need some more silvertip?

Xenia really require very good water quality. When something goes wrong in my tank the xenia are the first to show signs of deteriation. They're kind of like the canary in the mine shaft. I wouldn't say your skimmer is the problem. I skim like crazy and I've never had a problem growing xenia. You could add a little iodine, it might help, but I've never had a need for it. Are they in good water flow?

xenia are picky sometimes. I can't seem to kill mine, some people can't "grow" it. It's weird. I have heard about dosing with iodine, even doing iodine baths. I don't and never have really. I also skim 24/7, never been an issue with it. When I had my 29 I never skimmed and it was completely satisfactory (all good for the young kids).
It's one of those things. Like Master Lopez told me once, "I finally figured out what works in my tank and what doesn't work, so I stick with what works". Personally, I don't do well with sps, so I have come to terms with it and moved on. Maybe one day I will figure out why.

well I will add some iodine. The frags are in different areas... The higher flow one is the best one... hmmmm
Yea I will like more silvertip if these crash.... I'm trying some shrooms today and see what they do... Maybe it's a xeniea thing

I'm having a xenia problem right now and I think the culprit is my kenya tree softie war it could be the same thing with your leather how big is your leather? and other major groupings of softies, how often do you do water changes?

basically don't do water changes... just add R.O. Water weekly (5ish gallons) None of my corals are big enough to compete for food.

That is your problem then IMO.
Softies do a kind of chemical warfare. Gradually all soft corals release chemicals into the water which kill off any non compatible soft coral. If you don't do water changes the chemicals build up and will kill of other softies. xenia is one of the first to go. shrooms will be next. you need to do water changes if you want to keep softies alive. Food has very little to do with it. Since your tank has been up for what almost 8 months now. There are alot of things wrong with water other than phosphates and the nitrogen cycle.
Oh and check your iodine levels
