Topic: Bleaching Coral Posted: August 15 2004 at 10:40am |
I have a coral bleaching and I'm not sure why. It has been in the tank for over a year now, growing good. It has lightened up over the last several months but now is showing signs of mass bleaching. Any ideas??

Travis, Sorry to hear and see that. You know, I had the issue with some hydrophora. The stuff just bails really quick and that's it. Nothing you can do about it from what I have found. Anything change in your tank recently? Did your ph/alk/Ca crash or go out of whack?
Hence... my love of soft corals!

Yea a while back I had some trouble with kalk... caused precipitation and a elevated PH, twice. That's is what I'm thinking was the cause of another coral to start RTN ( http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3053& PN=1). Maybe this one was also effected.
What's the chances of him recuperating??

Causes of Bleaching (from Aquarium Corals, Eric Borneman)
- Bacteria
- Chemicals
- Ciliates
- Coccindeans
- Darkness
- Fungi
- Heavy Metals
- Higher Temperature
- Hypersalinity
- Hyposalinity
- Lack of Water Movement
- Light
- Medications
- Noxious Agents
- Physical Stress
- Red Spectral Light (<--- Take Notice Adam
)
- Sedimentation
- Starvation
- Stress
- Temperature Change
- UV (sudden increased or prolonged exposure)
As you can see from that exaustive list, it could be almost anything. Maybe it was higher temperatures, fluxuating salinity, degredation of your bulbs, Flatworm Exit, or almost anything else you can think of.
I just had a colony RTN on me... it sucks.

... before I added my ca and kalk reactors, I lost one very similar to yours Trav... I did have a magor alk swing just before the RTN began. Now, Jon, that was a sweet colony!!!

It was only in my tank about 3 weeks. I fragged the heck out of it when it started to RTN. I've only got two frags that haven't RTN'ed too. I've got my fingers crossed.

That's reassuring, thanks . This is my first coral to bleach so I'm not sure what to expect but I'm hoping he will recover. One side that gets the strongest light has not bleach, the side getting less light has??
BTW Jon, that coral is a beauty!! Hope the frags grown in strong for ya. Then we can do some frag swapping .

Perhaps it needs a dip in superglue...

Umm ... I don't swing that way. (not that there's anything wrong with that)
