Topic: Baby Shrimp Posted: June 28 2005 at 12:19am |
In the years of enjoying this hobbie (fresh and salt). Ive seen fish and corals die. Things come back from what I thought was complete death. Explosions of growth in corals, copods, algea, and other stuff.
However tonight I was completly amazed that in less than 2 minutes(the time it took me to feed another tank and get back) my tank had exploded with little baby shrimp. They were swimming through the current everywhere. There where so many that the water was cloudy and I thought that something had gone terribly wrong.
It was amazing to see so many baby anything. It was just as amazing to see my fish, who had just eaten, devouir as many as they could, as fast as they could. The whole experience lasted no more than 20 minutes. Im going to assume that all of the fish will have tummy aches in the morning. I turned the sump pump on and maybe some will survive in the refug.
I know that this is not the most awsome experience to have, but in my world, at that moment, is was extremely COOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!

That is COOL!!! It makes you wonder how many times things like this happen and you don't get the chance to witness it. I would love to see something like that.

Too cool... I can imagine. I've gotten to witness my clowns hatching and that's pretty cool to watch, too.

It is way cool. When I saw it, I thought someone had dissolved a tissue in the water until I looked really close. Neat thing for you to see!!

I had the same thing happen in my tank about 8 months ago... caught me
soo off guard... It was definitely a head scratcher since I was very new to
the hobby. I was unable to save any though.

I recently experienced the same thing in my tank. The two peppermint shrimp had been propogating, but I never saw the babies in the water until one night. The lights in the room were off and the moon lights were the only thing illuminating the tank. I noticed little specks in the water column. I thought they were copepods, until I looked closer and noticed they moved with a wriggling motion. So I got my flashlight out and shined it in the tank. These things were little, red dots flipping around in the tank. With my 10x jewlers loop I was able to see the eyes which were just two, little black dots. My kids were estatic and my wife also wanted to see them under magnification. To bad they were all gone in the morning.

I'll bet they breed once in between that you missed seeing. It should be every 14 days almost like clockwork.

If tank conditions (Alk & Ca) are not right, PS cannot molt and thus cannot breed.
Has anyone noticed the cool article about PS in the Sea Star Online October 2000 issue?
PS are simultaneous hermaphrodites... strange bedfellows
