The pH of my tank is 7.8 I would like to get it to 8.2... Should I dose calcium or just leave it be?
Thanks,

Wes

A 7.8 PH isn't terribly bad and calcium won't do much for your PH.
Is this reading during the night or mid day?
What are your ranges?
What do you dose to maintain Alk and Calk?

I am a greenhorn, so I don't dose anything! This is the first time I have tested pH... I just figured if I wanted to raise it I would dose calcium (more specifically calcium carbonate)...

How important is it to monitor pH? I have kept freshwater tanks for years and never worried about pH.

What is normal and specific time intervals?
Thanks,

Wes

Tanks will safely range from about 8.3 (daytime) to 7.8 (nighttime)- preferably 8.2 day and night. Many people never test PH. I run a probe which monitors my PH 24/7. Before you start dosing anything, you'll want to determine where you levels are and establish a regimen from there. At that point, dosing Alk or some type of buffer will help raise your PH.
