Topic: Frag Pics (growth / color / lighting ) Posted: October 12 2004 at 9:56pm |
Since i have started my SPS tank all from frags i am sort of documenting
its progress and i thought these were some of the more interesting
results so far. Some of these are great successes and some are just
interesting...
Coral #1 is a Purple Tip Stag
Pic #1 - new frag / Pic #2 - couple of months old
/ Pic #3 this frag really took off and is looking awesome!
Coral #2 is a Tan Cerealis
Pick #1 - Fairly new frag (very quick to encrust) / Pick #2
getting some nice green coralites (very slow to change color - likes
VERY HIGH light. Its about 9" from my 250w DE)
I got this frag from ShaneH this is his famous Purple Tip Acro - looks to me like this is a 10K baby!
Pic #1 - Look how nice this looks when i got it home! (from under shanes 10K bulb) / Pic #2 washed out under my 14K / Pic #3 look at those polyps (20K bulb)
I got this frag from Danny --- I have no idea what type of SPS this is
(maybe you can help), but Holy Cow! What a nice change from when i got
it! This frag is under a 14K and I think Danny had it under his 20Ks
Pic #1 -- new frag / Pic #2 -- today
These Pink with Yellow Tip Millie frags came from Sean -- Sorry about
the poor shots, but the color diffs are really striking! This is a
pretty slow grower for me ...
Pic #1 -- 14K bulb (better growth) / Pic #2 20K bulb (far better color)
Believe it or not this frag was 100% BROWN when i got it .. I thought ya right ... this will color up. pffft
ok lastly .. my favorite frag so far! super nice purple millie!

Thanks Jon! It is really cool to watch them grow out from almost nothing in some cases! Its pretty amazing to me how much the K of your lights effects the color of the coral.

Corey,
It's amazing - the color change from one tank to another. When I got the purple acro (as a frag) it was brown with green polyps! Nice pics.

Wow Corey, your new tank is going to be incredible. The way you can capture the polyps on the acros is just amazing.

Corey Awesome pics. Looks like acro's are doing really well in your care. Dont feel bad about the pink milli it grows super slow in my tank as well. But the color is all worth the wait.

That color difference is unreal! WOW. How long did it take to color up like that? Shane, wanna help further the light or water chemistry argument of coral coloration? Put some 20K bulbs over your tank. If it colors up like corey's it's all lighting, if it doesn't then it's something in the water. Somebody give Shane some 20Ks

Great shots Corey, It's amazing the color you are getting. Do you think that the growth has slowed down since you put them with the 20k lights?
I have 20k lights on mine and love the color, but the corals seem slow to grow, but thats ok with me, I'll take the color over growth any day.

 Lets do it!
I'm just looking for a reason to do some major changes! Believe it or not, I'm kinda getting bored with my tank. Its too full. I don't have room to add any frags and I don't have room for a bigger tank. Time to remodel. I was very impressed with Corey's tanks (and his space to expand)
After seeing Corey's new stuff - I'm green with envy - but then again, it could be the lighting.

Jon: I agree ... the color diff is amazing! I put that frag in my tank
about a week after i switched from my 55g so .. it must have been in
there for about 2 months.
Brad: I havent noticed much growth loss, but i have never run 10Ks
... I am running a 14K on my cube, but when it is replaced I'll move
over to a 20K I just like the color to much! As far as bulbs go .. .I
actually did a lot of reading and asking around before picking the BLV
.. It is supposed to be a VERY white 20K. I did try a 13K on my cube
before the 14K, but it seemed to bright and to straight white for me.
Plus, I did go with 3x250w over my 120 to compensate for the PAR loss
of the 20K.
Shane: Go for it! are you getting DEs or mogul?
