I've heard that you can glue or epoxy rocks together.  In my new tank I'm trying to simulate a rock wall and stack and glue rock vertical.  Is it possible and what product is used to hold the rocks together or to the glass.

Any comments greatly appreciated

Two part epoxy sold as AquaMend at Home Depot works well on dry rock or even on wet rock. I use a toothbrush to scrub the algae and detritus off of the rock and after mixing the two part push is well into the cracks and crevices of the rock. You can also drill the rock pretty easily and use zip ties or plastic or acrylic rods.

Have you looked at some tanks done this way? Have you seen the suspended reefs? There are many options to consider and maybe you have already thought about this, but I would encourage you to continue your study and planning.

I like to be able to change the aquascaping from time to time and I like to have my tanks in a sunlit window. The power of sunlight, even indirect sunlight, is more than you may imagine. Whether stacked rock or sand glued to the back, I dislike the wall look because it makes the tank look cramped. I also like to suspend the LR off of the sand, making for better circulation, better filtration and a more open look. The ocean view extends as far as light and turbidity will allow. Smile

For all these reasons I personally would not cover the back with rock/sand via Gorilla Glue or glue the rock together. I have drilled LBTR and used zip ties to connect it to a frame which made the frame invisible and the reef suspended. Very beautiful structures can be created by simply hooking the jagged edges together in a tripod setup. Arches and ledges can be made by the use of counterweight rocks. I'm in St. George so you probably cannot visit but I do have many pics if you would like to see them. Several hobbyists here have sand and rock backgrounds, even with small rock ledges, all created with Gorilla Glue. I hope they will chime in.

This is just FYI from someone who has seen and evaluated many 100's of tanks.Smile

First Question- does the tank have water in it?
That makes a big difference.  Are we talking about an empty tank you can lay down, or is this tank up and running?

Second Question- do you want to glue some rocks together to stack, or do you want to cover the back wall in a rock structure?  Again another very big difference.

You can always zip tie your LR onto egg crate, (Found in the lighting section of Home Depot).  In time coraline will grow on everything, but with egg crate, you can move them around and nothing is stuck to the glass.

Or you can with smaller rock, glue them to powerful aquarium magnets.  They can be moved all over the place.

Thanks for all the feed back.

The tank is empty and its own room with only one side being visible into the main family room (in wall tank)  no sunlight is available.  I don't want to be able to see the other room through the tank at any point.  I guess I could put black or blue paint on the back but I figured I could achieve the same result with a rock wall glued in place.  I plan on laying the tank on its side and gluing the rocks in so when the tank is up right the rocks will create many ledges an overhangs.  I didnt' think of drilling my rocks and ziptying them together though.  That might be a lot more work but alot less permanent.  The tank will be a reef tank.  I plan on making tons of ledges where coral can grow in full light.

What do ya think?

Jfinch inspired me from an old thread here:

I did something similar to the back. I used crushed coral down first, then the fine sand covering the rest to give some extra depth. Kind of like a popcorn ceiling look.

I agree with your reasoning. Sounds like it will be great looking tank.

Hey Jon and dduts, What happens when you go to move that tank? I'm thinking of all the live stuff attached to and living in the back wall. Down here in St. George, it's even drier than SLC so even a short move means death to Coralline Algae. In your setup in would imagine that you have coral attached to the wall. Question

It is not that bad if you can get it from point A to point B and set back up within a day.

I sold and moved my Cuttle Tank, and it had Zoas growing on the back wall, the tank was a little heavier, but all of the Zoas survived. The coralline turned a little pinker, but after a few days it was back to normal as well. I think they were all dry for about 3-4 hours, I think that coral is more resilient that people think.

I prefer the Rock on the back wall, and not being able to see any pumps in the tank...It looks more natural...

I drilled my rock and used acrylic rods and I love it there are three pilers that I have  in there and then I just stack a few rocks here and there leaving open sand and tons of caves for the fishies.

Mark, I've never had to move it, not sure how it would go.  But Jerry's probably right as long as you weren't moving it from Bountiful to St. George.  I like the look of rock and sand on the back wall better then glass.

I found a pic I took just after finishing the back to show the crushed coral/sand back wall. If I could do it over again, I'd take some flatter pieces of rock and attach those as well. I just wanted something a little different. I really liked Jerry's tank too with the actual rock attached to the back like shelves.
Six months later, there are softies growing on the back wall....mainly GSP and xenia. I'll worry about the move  when it comes up. Nothing too difficult to replace.
