Topic: kids aquarium Posted: February 16 2013 at 10:22pm |
I have been tossing around the idea of turning an aquariu into a treasure chest for my sons room. I want to make the background a pirate treasure map is there any way i can make this go on the inside of the aquarium so that it can cover the overflow? thanks

Print the image, laminate it, then coat the entire back of the aquarium with a two part sealing epoxy. Then enjoy scraping the algae every day.

Alternatively you could just have it on the outside of the glass. You can buy a type of oil that "seals" the background to the pane of glass that works really well. It's like $10 at petco.

Everything I can think of would not be fun for algae removal. I will keep thinking. What are your other ideas for the tank, maybe that will spark an idea.

On the extreme end if you could figure out a way to build a treasure chest around the tank, then have several holes in the "chest" that reveal the insides of the tank. A map could be incorporated into the outside of the chest. Perhaps a piece of painted canvas, singed edges, and covered in something to protect it and help it keep its shape. (modgepodge maybe?).
Another idea is putting the map in a sealed bottle, attach it to a rock and have it in the tank. You would have to take it out and clean it every once in a while.
I love creative projects like this. If you want to be bored with more ideas let me know.

Honestly the best way to deal with algae is to have a low light fish only aquarium. ( could maybe still do some mushroom corals ) Just do a couple strips of those LED ribbons, and only have the lights on for a few hours a day.

This would work. If you had the tank sitting level it would turn out smooth and a mag float with an acrylic pad would be fine for cleaning it. Any tank will have algae so dont let that scare you away. If you have your tank going good you wont hardly have to clean it though. I hardly ever have to clean my glass.

I am not sure what size it is going to be yet. I am thinking a 40 breeder would give good dimensions for a treasure chest. I am also thinking fish only aquarium.

I am open for all ideas. My wife wants me to put one in my girls rooms as well but I don't want it to be a treasure chest I don't know what to do for her

Maybe just put the map out the back of the tank (outside.) Paint a Jolly Roger on the overflow.
