I am looking to purchase a couple of black a.percula clowns in the next six months or so.  I would also like to have them host an anemone.  I am looking for suggestions/experiences/stories/resources on which anemone would be good to have for them.  I am planning on purchasing the anemone before I get the fish, and also before I get any more corals so that I can settle it in with the least amount of worry.  I've already been looking stuff up but want more input.  Thanks in advance

Nate

Also, keep in mind that many of the "black percula clowns" sold are actually captive raised ocellaris clowns.

If many times black a. ocellaris are sold as black a. percula, then how do I tell the difference since the normal 'black border' is no longer a viable option?  Or should I simply not worry about it and figure it out after I get the fish, and then get an anemone?

I think its best to get the amemone first. That way it can get comfortable before the clown starts hosting in it. Anemones can be quite sensitive.

I've read that the only way to tell the Percula from the Ocellaris is by counting the doral spines.  I'm not sure of the correct number of spines that each have, but one species has one more spine than the other.

It is possible to tell the difference between some perculas and ocellaris by counting the dorsal spines.  Although this is not always possible expecially on a live fish.

percula dorsal spines 9-10

ocellaris dorsal spines 10-11

hi..just browsing the forum...came across this one and took great interest in it.....I have a pair of ocellaris, and they took home to my purple tip anem, and ever since.....my anem has increased its size and doesn't move around anymore...they definantely stay away from my green carpet, which like to sufficate its self in the dark areas sometimes/:)( but I have heard that this type anem doen't naturally host to anem fish) I am still pretty new at the hobby, but opinions are what make this hobby so great

on another note.....I can't catch the first fish I put in the tank almost two years ago....any suggestions.....(this sucker is smarter than me and I don't want to move 50-60lbs of LR and LPS to get him) he has become a bully and is attacking all the other occupants and eating my corals, specificly my frogspawn (blue Streak Damsel)

Bubble,

There is a WMAS trap floating around somewhere. You may want to touch base with Mark P in this regard. He would be the all knowing in it's location.

As an alternate, have you tried putting a large net in the tank for the fish to get used to it, say an hour or so, then feed them. As the little guy is distracted by the food, scoop him up. It has worked for me in the past.

Is he eating your corals or picking at them?  Good luck.

I have the WMAS trap if you would like it. I haven't had much luck getting the damsel I want out yet, but your welcome to it.

I'm not sure I can answer Nate's questions or not.  This link from coreyk is a little confusing to me.  I'm not sure if he has a percula or an ocellaris.  That link on liveaquaria says they naturally live with S. mertensii and perculas don't.  But it also says the fish lives in the coral sea, and ocellaris don't.  So I'm not sure all their information is correct.  I want to bet that they are selling black ocellaris as is everyone else, as Jake already mentioned.

I tend to think that all black percs are black ocellaris.  Post a pic and I may be able to tell you.

This is the reason I am trying to find out what I am going to be purchasing.  I still want to get an anemone and put it in first, and then get the fish, but want to purchase an anemone that has the greatest chance of being a host for the fish.  I asked at from the sea the other day, and he said he "was getting perculas, but then no one is really sure they are perculas and not ocellaris..."  So I'm still in a bit of a quandry since I can't find the info anywhere...  I might just have to get an anemone that is good for both, or purchase one that does well with ocellaris and hope that it works.

You may want to ask the guys at The Aquarium. When I asked about them when they first got them in they said they were getting them from a guy in California who was breeding them, so they should know for sure what they are.

When I asked one of the workers at The Aquarium if the clown in the tank was a Percula or Ocellaris, I was told that they were the exact same species... there is no difference between the two !

From a quick call to LiveAquaria, they state that their black clown fish are the true percula, A. percula, fish.  Now I didn't spend tons of time quizing the guy, but supposedly they are true perculas.  I will double check before I buy anything.  Now, anyone know where I can find a purple Sebae anenome?

There are two anemones that I know of that naturally serve as hosts to both A. ocellaris and A. percula.  They are Heteractis magnifica and Stichodactyla gigantea.  However, in the aquarium setting, they will accept almost anything as a host.  There is a large group of people out there trying to talk people into using xenia as a host on not anemones.  Something to consider.

Funny you should say that.  My Ocellaris spends the day around my frogspawn, but very seldom swims into it.  He spends the night hours sleeping within the xenia.  I wonder why he doesn't host in the xenia during the day?

My tank-raised true percula hosted in amy xenia as well. He liked it so much he killed it! The xenia would nevr open up fully when the fish was in it.

I now have a BTA in the same tank as the true percula and it doesn't even care. Go figure.

From everything I have read the tank-raised ones are much less likely like to host in an anenome and there is also a chance it may host in something you don't want it to.

I figure since I don't really have anything else for the fish to host in, if I put in an anemone chances are it will host with that--rather than one of my 4 little mushrooms, some zooanthids or one of my 5 sps...   But still looking to get the anemone first.  Figure it will settle in better.

This is a nice chart. One question though, if there is no check mark in a square what does that mean? That they won't host or that you don't know? I have had GSMs and Saddle Backs host in E.Quadricolor. Also, I have never had an ocellaris that wouldn't host in an E.Quadricolor.

Just my experiance.

Torghn,

To tell you the truth I haven't really looked or changed this chart in over 3 years.  It has constantly been a work in progress.  Most of the information represented in the chart has been from my personal experience.  If anyone else has any feedback I will gladly accept it and change my chart if I can verify a couple sources.

Another chart that I found was http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-10/hcs3/ - http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-10/hcs3/ . I haven't bounced it with Jake's but I am sure that there is alot that we still don't understand yet about what can and will happen. I do know that my domino damsel took to my bubble and LTA but my false perc's wouldn't go near them.

Well, different factors came into play.  One lack of an affirmative id on black clowns, two wife's thoughts and opinions and mostly $$$$$.  So last night I ended up purchasing a pair of ocellaris clowns, 'bout 1.5", for less than the price of one black ($20 vs $29).  I'll have to wait until I can afford the blacks--maybe next year when they aren't so 'new'.
