Just returned from a pet trade show in Vegas and saw the new LED full spectrum lighting coming out this year and let me tell you they are great.. No heat no high power bills and all the corals they had under the demo looked awesome look for these lights when they come out a little expensive but worth it to me..

Can you relate "how expensive"? Comparable to MH in cost or light intensity?

#$%^ expensive, which is a lot more than 'real expensive'.

Which manufacturer's are getting on board with it?  Was there one particular company that stood out from the others?

I've been very dissapointed in them thus far.  The demos I've seen were hot, low on light, pricey fixtures, and really weren't that impressive.

I think it is only a matter of time until LEDs replace halides for many applications.  The LED products I have seen recently have been somewhat impressive, but the cost is 3-6 times more then a traditional halide light and not quite the same intensity.  I think in the next couple of years we will see LED lights come down in price while getting brighter at the same time.

I work in architecture and every few months a new company puts out a new LED fixture, mostly decorative, but they are indeed progressing.  They really haven't hit the point where they will replace fluorescent or even incandescent fixtures within a building, but my guess is that it is right around the corner.  Remember how quickly compact fluorescent fixtures started replacing incandecent bulbs in our homes.

LED's are already so widely used in other industries like automotive, electric signage and exterior lighting like intersection street lights that it will only be a matter of time until aquatic lighting catches up.

I agree with Jake, that right now the cost is probably too prohibitive for all but a few, but in a couple of years we may be ready to switch.   I hope so because I would love to stop sending so much $$$ to Rocky Mountain Power each month. Angry

The ones at the show were put out by a company called solaris . the fixture was cool to the touch  the intensity was not that of a halide but still looked nice. the cost of running it was said to be more the half the cost of halides cheeper .  and the controls on it could do everything  from sun up to sun down also cloud cover and silly things like lightning  storms .. the cost for a 4 foot light  was about 1600.00 retail "thats crazy " but none the less cool ..

Here's an evaluation by Dana Riddle. On a side note, its a very well designed comparison of the Solaris and a MH lighting system.

So here's a bump of an old thread.  I see on PFO's website that a 48" solaris LED system is $2325.  Ouch!  I thought these systems were going down in price! Too bad I can't get people to fund my "research" with something like this like Adam...  Maybe I should write PFO and state that I need one of their fixtures for scientific purposes- think that would work?Wink

I've found high quality 3 Watt LED's for $3 each.  Then I've found reflectors that look just like the ones in the solaris system for $1 each.  You could set the reflectors into an acrylic panel of some kind.  Okay, that's as far as I've got.  But it seems like you could make something for around $200. (Without the fans.)

What brand of LED?  I wouldn't worry as much about the wattage as I would about the lumens produced.  I think the Lumileds are the only viable LEDs at current for a tank fixture.

I'll have to ask - I don't think their web page states the lumens.  What should it be?  I thought wattage was important because solaris makes such a big deal out of it.  I couldn't find where they mention the lumens.

Yeah, it really shouldn't cost so much for LED lights, they are very inexpensive.

I agree, that's why I want to try and make one of these lights myself.  But, I have found that there is a huge difference in the quality of LED's.  There price goes up as soon as you start specifying things like wattage, angle of light, brightness, etc.  Some LED's won't cut through 2 inches of water because they are so weak.  Others are designed to work great under water.  I've found some that cost $20 each - but still, that doesn't justify the cost of the solaris.

True most LEDs are expensive, but many of the new LEDs are in the order of $20.00 per diode, but the prices for these more expensive LEDs are coming down.

Amie,

The Lumileds LED are about 120-160 lumens per LED.
