I know this is due to selective breeding, but the fish is so beautiful it takes my breath away. Anybody know if we have any of these in the States? You can find these in the US, However, they are very hard to come by and in my experience with them in the past I had a difficult time getting them to eat. They are a straain of African Chiclid that has been breed to have more vibrant colors. I think I paid around $100 for them 3 years ago when I was in Flkorida if they are the exact same species.

No offense, but I think it's an abomination.
Aulonocara sp. are not supposed to look like that.

Adam doesn't like it? I changed my mind. That's the most beautiful fish I've ever seen. Sign me up for a couple!

Now that's what I wanna hear.
I don't know for sure; but Adam usually hate these "pretty but unatural' things, doesn't he?

Steve,
Thanks for the info. Do you know under what name these fish are sold? I would like to find out more about them; but can't even begin the search.

Kill them all before they continue breeding! I know I already voiced my opinion in the other freshwater thread, so I'll just say, "Them're purty fishies." Good luck finding them Dinhkim.

What can I say Jamison? except for that I am proud to be superficial . I like all things pretty.
I don't even have a cichlid tank; but man if I can get my hands on these, I'll set up a tank just for them.

I will call the store that I bought them from. He keeps records of every fish that someone buys. I will get the name and PM you with the results.

Sure they're pretty, but do they run into the side of the tank, each other, substrate, rock work and so on? With all the inbreeding these guys have gone through, there has to be some kind of "deficiency" somewhere...

From what I remember on these fish, they were a cross between a Johani Chiclid and a Discus, but I can not remember for sure. The Germans do a lot of cross breeding with Discus because they love the coloration on them. But the problem with the discus is that they are so fragile. That is why they have been doing a lot of cross breeding with other species to create a more hardier species with the same coloration.

Are you serious? That just doesn't seem plausible. Now I definitely have to find out about them. And if they turn out to be a hybrid, maybe i don't want them after all.

Here is the website. Even with translation, the read doesn't make much sense to me; but it seems that they are selectively bred, not crossbred.

I really doubt they're a cross breed. They appear to have the same body shape as any other Aulonocara sp (as opposed to the horrid blood parrot cichlid). Just selectively bred for red.

Like I said it was a long time ago and I could have been mistaken on the cross breeding.

I just got a call back from the store in Florida that sold me the fish. It was not the same one as you were speaking of, mine was a cross breed of a discus and a johanni. Very similar as the one you were looking at.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought that a S. American could breed successfully with an African. All this talk about cichlids makes me want to set up a mbuna tank...

You mean a Mbuna tank full of German-bred, red as can be, Firefish Aulonocara sp .
Steve, thanks for making the phone call. I never would have thought that was possible.

Dinhkim;
We had some that were nearly the same. They were slightly more orange than red, but very close. $12.99
Sorry, I will let you know if I receive more.

Okay, finally a topic I can talk about (12 years of cichlid breeding before I just recently went to salt). If that is the fish I think it is, it is also know as a strawberry peacock. They are for sale on aquabid fairly often. As for line breeding in cichlids, it is hugely common. Try german red peacocks, ruby red (rubescens), demasoni (for clean bars), yellow labs, just to name a few. There is a huge article on utahaquatics relating to it. I will post a link, but it went pretty far to explain why line breeding has not caused issues. Pretty informative. As for cross breeding, I am not into that.
If you are curious here is a link to my photobucket album that has pics of some of the fish I sold when I went salt (I made enough from them to pay for my salt water setup):
