| What is the best way to get Ich out of my tank. Its a reef tank so copper isn't an option. My Blue Tang has it pretty bad and its spreading to my Purple Tang and Coral Beauty. Any suggestions would help. Thanks. |

Well this is my favorite subject.... One I actually know something about,,, Do NOT buy kick ich or any other miracle cure, Dont try to catch you fish and put it in a QT tank that just stresses them more. All tanks, and I will say that again, all tanks most likey have ich. Healthy fish can fight it off so you would think you dont have it but you do... Get garlic extreme and put MEGA does in with a mix of high quality food. ASAP... mix blood worms, brine, mysis, 1/2 a cube cycolpeeze, sea weed ( for the tang ) and squid, in a big bowl. Then add 1/2 a bottle garlic extreme. Take the mix and put it in the same trays the food came in and DONT over feed. Give them 1 cube per day and within one week...... no ich Lucky you, I am mixing up a batch today if you want to buy a tray... Send me a PM & I can have it to you buy noon... ------------- I have flying monkeys and I'm not afraid to use them. 180 gallon money pit that I love..... |

If you do a search in this forum you will find that this topic has been discussed at great length. Try supplementing your feeding with garlic. There are many types that work, I went to the fish store and bought some Kent's Garlic Extreme (it is pricey but I didnt have to drive all around to health food stores to get the garlic there). I actually drip in a couple drops every time I feed, and havent had ich since I started doing that. Also, you can try a fresh water dip. Personally, I do not do fresh water dips as I feel that catching the fish in a reef tank (if possible at all! Good luck - it is a nasty thing that Ich. |

Get a cleaner! We have a wrasse, who some say are not very hardy, but
we've had ours as long as I can remember! And, cleaner shrimp are very hardy! The cleaners will clean your fish of crap you can't even see! One drawback, though. They eat your pods! Our tanks have been set up sooo long, I know we have ick spores. And, everytime you introduce a new specimen, or a scoop of live sand or macroalgae or anything, spores tag along and lie in wait to cause trouble. If your tank is healthy (good biological base) and your fish are healthy (fed a diverse diet to boost their immune system), ick is just like the humane version of stress. Strep bacteria (just to name one of millions) is everywhere in our world, but how often do we get sick? Just when our immune system is upset! |

Neon gobies are awesome! And you can get some tank raised neon gobies and they are even better. I recently bought one, and he has done an amazing job on my fish. Adam ------------- Come to a meeting, they�re fun! |

I paid like $16 for a tank raised cleaner goby at The Pet Factory. I saw them posted on this site under the LFS section, and I went there that week. Again, I'm very pleased with that purchase. Adam ------------- Come to a meeting, they�re fun! |

The suggestions made in the posts above have covered the cure. Ich that is spreading from fish to fish indicates a larger problem. Lets talk about making the tank healthier which will prevent ich in the first place. 
We need to know about your aquarium, so if you don't mind, please tell us a little about it. Size? Sump/Refugium? Filtration aspects? List of fish? Number and size of inverts, including coral? Lighting? Ph reading at 5PM and at 5AM? Water circulation? Using any additives? And a pic is worth 1000 words. Well, I've seem to got it under control. It was on the coral beauty, purple tang and blue tang. But now only the blue tang has a problem. The coral beauty has a few tiny spots, and the purple tang has nothing.
The Tank: It is a 46 gal bowfront with 250 w HQI over it. Emperor 400 and a prism skimmer. A seico 620 powerhead, (I think, the powerhead is new) No sump or refuigm. I have a Black clown, occlerais clown, purple tang, blue tang, zebra damsel (that I can't get rid of), and a pearly jawfish. Corals include some various acro frags, frogspawn, mmushrooms and ricordia, zoanthids, one plate and a brain. I've been increasing my dosing of garlic and it seems to be helping a ton. The good news is the blue tang is happy and eating a lot. So I'm sure it should be gone in a few days. Thanks for all the help. Anymore advice is always appreicated! |

| I've had all these guys for quit a while and haven't changed the feeding habits too much. I test for all the commons, Nitrate, Nitrite and Ammonia, but they all come out almost zero. So I don't worry about that too much. But I'll try decresing the feeding. ALthough I have enough hermit crabs to clean up any food that is not eaten. |

Garlic will help rid the ich, but is not a permanent solution. I suspect that there are more fish in the aquarium than the filtration can handle.
You answered my questions pretty well, but regarding "filtration aspects", having an Emperor 400 and a skimmer doesn't give us enough info. Would it be okay if we help you understand more about what marine aquarium filtration really is? To help you start in this quest for knowledge, please tell us how much substrate you have, what it looks like and is it alive with "critters". Second, do you have any algae growing in the aquarium? Please tell us about it (and what is the pH at 5AM?). Last question for this post, do you have any LR? Please tell us how much and what it looks like.
