When you buy a pair of harlequin shrimp, and one is noticably larger than the other, are they a mated pair? We had a pair, and the larger one died last night. So I am wondering if I can simply buy another, or if they would not get along. Would I have to buy another pair, or which one is which sex?

You possibly had a mated pair. Females usually grow larger. They are hard to pair up, simply buying another they probably would not get along. It is possible to tell males from females. Your best bet to get a pair is to buy them as a pair. My female died and the male never would accept another female.

On the other hand I bought a small harlequin first. I thought I lost him and purchased a much larger one. A few days later I found the little one in my sump and put him back in the display. The two are think as thieves. However I am not sure of the sex. Now that I know how to sex em' up I'll check them out next time.

On another note, any ideas why your died. That would be my first course of action if I was in your shoes. Have you done any tests on your iodine lately?

No, but the other one is fine. I also have like, 5 sexy shrimp in the same tank. And a pipefish. That's it. And the sexy shrimp seem to be slightly more sensitive to water conditions than some other shrimp, so if those are going strong I assume nothing can be that off. But I'm going to be switching the tanks soon, too. So even if something is off, it will be corrected soon.
