Hi All,
I just got a coral banded shrimp and am wondering about your experience with them. After Googling it some say it is agressive and damages coral, snails, hermits and small fish while others say it is peaceful and reef safe.
What is your experience?
Should I put it in the display or keep it separately?

I love my Coral banded shrimp.
I got mine because I had an infestation of bristle worms, and it took care of most of them.
It dosen't seem to knock over any rocks or corals ( the hermit crabs do most of that), and a fish would have to be realy small for it to grab. ------------- Is a 125 gal. tank a good starter tank? |

I have 3 in my 210. I asked the same question before I put them in the tank. Now that they are in there, I hate them and will never be able to get them out. The problem is that you will never be able to put the working shrimp in there (scarlet cleaners, peppermint). They say that they are cleaner shrimp, but they chase away anything that gets close to them. They are way too fast to catch without ripping out all of my rockwork.
Now they are huge and two of them are mating (seeing dead baby skins floating around). If it was me, I wouldn't put them in.

I want to get one of mine out of my 24g nano...
They are great for keeping bristleworms from taking over, but when they run out of food they start looking elsewhere. From what I have been reading it seems they are OK as long as they get pleanty to eat. If feeding is neglected they will eat whatever is available. It's all about choice. Just remember, once they are in the tank, it is almost impossible to get them out. I'm sure you will put them in there, after all, we did too. So just take 2nd thought about it before you do. (Then we can say "we told you so", twice).
I'm still a noob, and I am just giving my opinion from the little experiance that I have, so take everyones opinion and make your own decision.

Well I didn't wind up putting him in my tank but my Dad wanted him and it's been in the tank for about a week with no problems. This is the first shrimp to survive Dads tank. He has had several cleaner shrimp and they all get eaten within a couple days. The Coral Banded Shrimp has staked out a place in the back of his rocks and seems to stay there most of the time. A "fish trap" baited with some krill or other meaty food should do the trick...especially if you set it in the tank right before "lights out"...
I am pretty sure the Club owns a couple of these traps and perhaps you could borrow one from the Club?
P.S. If you do manage to get them out of your tank I'd be happy to take them from you!

I have two in a 120 and I love them... Mine are huge and its a balst to watch them hang upside down and try to catch fish. Of course they never can.
I pulled mine out and put them in a nano I had. I thought they were easy to catch. You will pull off a few limbs but they grow right back. If they pinch you it does not hurt. Just grab them........
Mine have never hurt any other thing in my tank but I do feed well so maybe that's why I have had good luck with them. ------------- I have flying monkeys and I'm not afraid to use them. 180 gallon money pit that I love..... |
