| I think I'm having my first bacterial bloom. I have a 40 gal breeder with a 150 halide, until this morning. I added another 150 halide. 2 hours after lights were on, all corals, anemones, zoas, etc. looked better than I had ever seen them. I left the house for two hours and when I got back, my tank temp was up from 80 to 85 and the water is all milky. Livestock all seems fine. Aside from getting temp down, is there anything else I should be doing? |

yes, get as much air in that thing as possible. try to get the temp under control but do it slowly. the air is the big thing. with a bacterial bloom you water is anaerobic, all of that bacteria is eating up the air and the lest efficient "breathers" will suffer, this means corals, and even fish/inverts. air stones, skimmer, ect. if you are in SLC and need equipment, air pumps and wooden air stones let me know. 541-505-4974

another question, do you dose ca and alk? what is your pH? possible overdose? just thinking of other possibilities...

Some one pucked. The tank temp didn't sit well with the corals. Algae bloom would have been green. White is either alk/calc overdose or corals spewing there guts out. 3 Things. 1- water change. 20% would be good. 2- temp control. A must 3-run carbon to neutralize any chemical warfare between the corals.
If its a bacterial bloom your in deep crap. As the bacteria dies the ammonia will shoot up. (harming all fish involved) No system can adapt to that much die off that fast. Monitor ammonia closely as well as your basics. Water changes would be my first choice of defense if that is the issue.

Is there a sump? Skimmer? How long has this tank been set up? | It was precipitation. I don't know how it happened, I drip kalk from a reactor, but that only accounts for about half a gallon per day. Everything is back to normal now. Iv'e had the tank for about 8 months now, I bought it used and the system is several years old. There is a sump and a skimmer. I'm floating carbon in a bag in the sump for now, and my next project will be a carbon reactor. My sps do not appreciate my new toadstools. All the livestock came through just fine. I do not dose anything else, just kalk. |
