I hope Erik doesn't mind me saying this but I think we should raffle for it at the MWRF! $10 a ticket. Any takers?

Eric, did you do all the glass work yourself or did a glass shop do that to your specs?

Was this a custom design for a customer or something you just cooked up?

I'm way excited for the raffle! I better win something though. I am the guy that never wins any raffle ever.

I know you talked to Erik about the tank. He had mentioned the raffle idea to me when I brought up the MWRF.

If we use it for the raffle, don't forget, we need to etch "Mountain West Reef Fest" on one side and "Marine Aquatics" on the other in at least 2" lettering...dont you think? After all, anyone winning such a beauty would love to show how/where they won it...right? And if we throw in a vortech and a Neptune controller, we can etch the other two sides with their logos...perfect! LOL

Wow Eric! I thought it was pretty cool until I saw the LED shots. Now I think it's probably one of the coolest aquariums I've seen.

It would be really cool to do the LED's shooting up through the glass like that on a zero edge tank as well.

Basically trying to point out the fallacies in human logic.

This tank is a perfect comparison to the stand issue. Take something so beautifully created, then add something so out of place. The logic should hold true that if someone is not bothered by putting lettering or logos on a gorgeous piece of woodworking, then it should hold true for this gorgeous piece of glass work.

I am simply a logical guy. Can someone explain the logical difference of putting lettering on this tank above the waterline compared to putting lettering on a wood canopy? If the reasons thus far given for the latter are valid, they should also be valid for this tank.

And, yes, I find logic and argumentation fun and humorous but it can often be construed as being a dick...and that too is humorous...  LOL

Eric, again this is one sweet ass tank...kudos for thinking and reaching outside the box (pun intended)...I can't wait to see it in person with the lights...if it does make it to the reef fest raffle, so long as there is no lettering, I will put lots of tickets in that bucket.

Can you imagine running a chiller on this tank, cranking it down to 38 degrees, and then putting various species from the arctic in it...even juvenile crab species...that would be sweet.

And, you could float little pieces of Styrofoam icebergs in it....hehehe

Now that would be the tank for the hobbiest that has already done it all...Adam, Mark?

Oh, and a question, why aren't more tanks made with mitered corners on their glass?

Posted By: Aquarium Creations

Thefu

No most aquariums made are lap joints not mitered, leemar, allglass, marineland, oceanic, all do lap joints.

The question was "why not?"

Is it less strong, does it cost too much, did they just not think of it, do consumers not care?

Posted By: Ryan Thompson
Date Posted: October 09 2009 at 12:11pm
I am sure it costs a little more to have every sheet of glass cut at the 45 degree angle like Erik did here.

It is much stronger to do it the way Erik did. I think the tank is 26 or 27 inches tall and he used 1/2" glass. The corners give him almost 3/4" of contact compared to only a 1/2" with a lap joint.

Posted By: Aquarium Creations
Date Posted: October 09 2009 at 12:36pm
Thefu,
I think the main reason is cost and it takes alot longer to build them then  the lap joint tanks. To do the 45degree corners everything has to line up purfect, unlike lap joint you have more wiggle room.
Also the 45 degree angle aren't cut they have to be ground down to the degree

Basically trying to point out the fallacies in human logic.

Which fallacy are you pointing out? Argumentum ad populum?

I enjoyed studying logical fallacies. Although I have to think hard to recognize them anymore.

Posted By: thefu
Date Posted: October 09 2009 at 5:51pm
Yes, to begin with that could be used to dispute simply having writing on the stand...most people like writing on the stand, therefore writing on the stand makes the best stand.

But, even my assertion that...people like writing on the aquarium stand, therefore they will like writing on any aquarium... is also fallacious. Denying the Antecedent (as far as I can tell)

But, that said, what argument could one make that the two situations are not the same if one claims "I would love to display to everyone where and how I won this great tank" on one hand, but would not in the other instance with this tank. The argument is not that they do not mind it, but would even prefer it as some sort of statement. So it would seem to follow that people of that school of thought would want etched branding on this one and it should bring in more tickets.

Posted By: Rioreefer
Date Posted: October 09 2009 at 6:00pm
I think the tank is so unique that any etching would take away form its unique beauty.
Besides then you cant see in the tank you J/A

Posted By: thefu
Date Posted: October 09 2009 at 6:04pm
I agree...and that was my point on the stand...

But, you could put the etching above the waterline...J/A...you crack me up.

Shane and Fu-
Not to burst your bubbles but keep in mind that most people who buy tanks that light up like this are buying tanks that DO have patterns, letters, logos, and things like that engraved on them!!!!

Most of them are NOT buying light up tanks that are just etched on the top.

Adam
ps- however, Eric's tank is unique in not having a smooth top

Denying the Antecedent

Could be.

The logical fallacy being: Since I like the engraved hood, I must therefore like the engraved glass.

One cannot assume x because of y.

Posted By: Shane H
Date Posted: October 09 2009 at 10:38pm
Adam,

My bubble is certainly not burst.  I'm not expressing an opinion either way. I just enjoy the arguement and the logical fallacies that occur as a result. I haven't seen many lighted tanks to know whether most have engraved logos.  The lighted tanks I have seen,  did not.

I know when its time to be quiet! Wink

One final thought though ... (and my official opinion)

If a vendor (any vendor) is willing to donate to a club event then the club should be gracious and appreciative of the donation.

And ... I like the engraving on the stand and canopy. I would avoid it on the glass tank.

Posted By: thefu
Date Posted: October 09 2009 at 11:49pm
I too like some of the engraving on the wood, but not wording, logos or acronyms. Personal opinion is that it detracts and it becomes a sign. Although I was not surprised that some did not mind the lettering on the canopy, I was very surprised that many actually preferred it...hence the somewhat tongue-in-cheek suggestion that if this Ice Age tank were to be in the raffle it should have it too.

I completely agree with you Shane, any donation should be and is greatly appreciated. Both the stand and this tank are incredible pieces of handiwork.   Hugto all!

I never claimed to be running with the most popular vote and I would totally rock this tank with some etching along the top front as long as it was all above the water line! If you etched some light snow in or ice caps on some of those points so that they would glow a little different when the lights are on that would be pretty cool also! and it's not like glass etching is hard to do. Most of us did it in art glass at some point in school.

Keith-
That's one thing that really sets this off.  Eric's tank is etched on top and lights from under the tank.  All that I've seen previously were carved in the front panel of glass and mostly along the bottom.  The light was on top of the front pane and was attached in the canopy.

Kind of cool seeing it light from bottom to top.
