So this question is for all of you feeding garlic extract to your fishes. If garlic oil is beneficial in keeping your fish healthy has anyone tried using fresh garlic chopping it up and mixing it in with the food to be fed? Wouldn't this achieve the same result as the oil? Just curious cause the garden is coming on strong right now and have a bunch of fresh garlic that needs to be used up.

Here is my take (and if you missed the Aug meeting - you missed my whole spiel) if feeding garlic make you feel better, then do it. It likely not doing anything to help your fish, but its also not likley hurting anything either.

My take on garlic....It is mostly just an attractant. That is, it entices fish to eat. Fish that have good nutrition and follow the "food pyramid"(we can all ease up on the junk food) tend to be healthier.
So...I add garlic to my fish food.
Before I was using garlic, I had an outbreak of Ick. I dosed garlic extract directly into the tank AND added it to the food. The ick went away and the fish lived. I don't think there is enough evidence that the garlic cured my fish.
Now, I use garlic with the food. My fish don't get ick. But, that also is not enough evidence that garlic is preventing it.

There is no need to do a science test on it. I don't know why Jake, who has been in this hobby twice as long as I have, has not seen the positive results of dosing Garlic, maybe because he didn't use the Garlic Oil formulation that worked best in his tank, but Garlic Oil does make a big difference. Every tank is different and each Garlic Oil seems to work well in one tank or another. I've had less good results from the $20 garlic made by aquarium additives manufacturers than with the cheap stinky stuff found at the grocery store for $5.
My brother had trouble with smashed garlic cloves added to his frozen food. So don't count on your home grown garlic to do the job. Be ready to switch to a processed Garlic Oil if the fresh garlic doesn't clear up Ich in a day or two. Connie does a great job at keeping her aquariums so maybe the difference was that she presses the clove whereas my brother used the entire mashed substance.
As was mentioned by Santiago/SGH360, the full instructions are found in the Tips and How To's section of the big thread linked below. Look for "Secrets of adding new fish and the Miracle of Garlic Oil."
Have fun.

Thanks everybody for the replies. I have used oil in the past and have seen it work on serval fish that appeared to have ich. So I am a believer in it working. My main concern was if using whole garlic mashed up would cause problems or help. But it sounds like it would be just like the oil. It might work or it might not just depends on the tank. Thanks again to everybody for the info. Ryan
