Ok I have only 1 fish in my tank right now. It is a Coral Beauty. 2 days ago while doing some rock work my friend noticed a few white spots on it. So being my only and first SW fish I am in a panic.

What are some remedies to get rid of this? I do not want to put chemicals in my tank if I don't have to. I started feeding pellet food with garlic in it.   Just was wondering what some of you have had sucres with.

I am supposed to be picking up a pair of clowns Saturday night and really don't want them to get it also. So please please help..

My yellow tang had ick, and i took a clove of garlic and chopped it up and threw it in the tank.  The tang did eat some of the garlic though, so I don't know if it was the consumption of the garlic or having garlic in the water that helped him.

I would just do a garlic soak maybe and see if you can get it to eat that.  My tang was completely healed in like 2-3 days and is totally fine now.

I am a noob though so don't take my words to heart unless someone confirms this.

I might hold off on adding new fish right now. Problem is the ick parasite has a part of it's life cycle where it drops off the fish host and kind of 'hibernates' a short while in your tank.

Any newly introduced fish are at a greater risk of picking up the disease simply from the stress of being moved from one tank to the other...

Garlic is a good idea; either add your own to the fishes food, or you can buy some garlic oil abd soak the food in that.

Will adding a protien skimmer and uv sterilizer help my situation?

I don't know if it will help with curing him, but will definitely help with future outbreaks.  I guess it can't hurt in helping him get better though as well.

Skimmer and UV are good things to have

UV can help reduce the amount of ick cysts floating around in your tank - but will not 100% eliminate all of them under normal circumstances.

Skimmer won;t help with ick specifically - but a cleaner tank is usually a happier tank

I hate to say it, but you will be taking an very unneccesary risk (IMO) adding any new fish into a system that currently has an Ick problem...

Do you have another tank where you could house the new fish - under qaurrantine - for probably a whole month?

No I do not have any way to house them. And I am not backing out of a deal I already made a commitment about.

Will this also affect my cleaner shrimp?

I would just pay for the clowns and ask them to hold them a few more days/ weeks if possible.  If I was closer I would let you put them in my quarantine tank.

Better yet, set up a cheap quarantine tank.

Do you have any corals, inverts, etc.  If not, you can treat your tank with hypo-salinity and get rid of it.  If you don't have a quarantine tank to treat all incoming fish/corals/rock/etc, then you will eventually get ick again.

I have had very good success with just running a uv-sterilizer and probiotic (http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4726).  I just use the probiotics when I add something new, but run the uv 24/7.  I don't know if I have just been lucky since I started with the uv and probiotics, or if they really work.

Well I wanted to give an update. After feeding pellet food containing garlic and installing a uv sterilizer my fish appears to be doing great!   White dots are pretty much completely gone. He is more active and looks happier! Thanks everyone for the help!!

That is great news, But you are not out of the woods yet.  The second and third rounds can be even worse.  So keep up with the garlic and UV.
